The 15 (or 20 or whatever) minute city was a nice way to explain useful accessibility metrics, but with ideologues taking it too literaly and researchers quantifying it within an inch of its life, the whole idea is tarnished, in my view. We never should have stopped calling it the pint of milk test.

new working paper. we match cars sold almost identically in hybrid and regular gas in the US. 730 match-years. we see how differences (especially the price premium) changed. premiums fell fast from 2012-2019 and then flattened at ~$2k papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

new tech is changing our soundscapes - data centers are loud - drones are loud - electric lawnmowers/leafblowers etc are quieter - electric vehicles are quieter at low-medium speeds - people play loud videos on transit and in cafes - people wear noise cancelling airbuds/headphones

Emergency Streets is a program (credit Kevin Krizek for his work developing this) where every time there is a road fatality, the street is fitted with traffic calming measures to assess what permanent measures should be installed to improve safety. Spokane is the first pilot program for this.

Today’s Waymo adventures included the sliding doors open long before I arrived, so someone was getting into it when I got there, and a very bad route heading southeast when my dest is northeast. Support assured me this was the fastest route, which it 100% isn’t. The u-turns are a nice touch, too.

there’s a lot here about how these economies run on diesel, but one other thing of note is fishermen aren’t going out as they have diesel boats. That’s good for the fish, bad for the fishermen. These places are dealing with $9/gallon (converted from liters, I assume), which seems in play in the US.
