Ireland, like most countries, punishes women financially for having children, does not value care work or pay for it appropriately, and has an economy that depends on the unpaid care work of women. We are fundamentally unprepared for an aging population with fewer young folks around.

I'm glad the assisted suicide bill didn't pass, but I'm also sad. it brings me relief, but no pleasure. I believe terminally-ill people should have the right to choose their time of passing. but under prevailing social conditions, it is impossible to implement without becoming a euthanasia program.

Well, what I always say, "I just want everybody to be treated good." I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it. I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I've got transgender people. I've got gays. I've got lesbians. I've got drunks. I've got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.

And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are. I know how important this is to them. That's who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there's something to be judged, that is God's business. But we are all God's children and how we are is who we are.

You sometimes see Government TDs pointing out that Ireland isn’t unique in the world in having a housing crisis. But this graph in today’s Financial Times shows just how extreme ours is compared to the places elsewhere, which also describe themselves as a in a housing crisis.
The share of young adults living with their parents is climbing in many countries and cities, with Ireland leading the way % of people aged 25-34 who live with their parents. National averages vs major regions

[5 line graphs. Ireland’s is sharply above 40% since 2010. The rest show US, U.K., Canada and Australia. The next highest result is the US at just over 20%]

A cursory scan through the history of the phrase in the Dail shows that the government has said that nobody has a
'monopoly on compassion' when it comes to: what's happening in the West Bank, the treatment of animals in Ireland, the treatment of SNAs in Ireland, the Residential Tenancies Bill, Jeffrey Epstein, floods in Cork, the tragic death of Harvey Morrison Sherratt, energy prices, and 'the housing sector. All of those examples are from the last seven months, and I have not included every example.
