white people in the west have never told the truth about "meritocracy"; they pulled this shit too when it was east asians (they hated us unless they could fuck us, and even then they hated us) they will always redefine "merit" to be something only they qualify for.

Thats the same way americans will respond to criticism. Mysteriously I have not seen Canadians and Australians do this. But I have seen it with Argentina, Singapore.. etc etc

Like the average European guilt ridden leftist will more likely go, I dont want to inherit the sins of my ancestors and less likely be saying how can you condemn the entire nation of France? Do you know we're not all white here, do you know we have immigrants and romani people and jewish people

How Israelis respond to criticism is really just how most settler colonies respond to things. Look over there, look over here, look at this non sequitur

Theres always been some crisis about the children, about the definition of womanhood and about masculinity, I think we live in particularly tough times but the endless "thing observed in children" seem to be less observation and more a covert conclusion

I honestly dont believe the "the youth are stupider now" it really seems like a psyop or something to further deny children their rights. If anything children seem to be smarter, its just some handfuls are falling prey to alt right pipelines

This discourse is so crazy its like we werent all playing the same game lol. Astarion is perfectly fine with people being subjugated and torn apart, you can literally push a child off a cliff to fall into an ocean of bear traps and you'll see the tick "Astarion Approves"

I think the worst mistake Penguin Random House did with Baldurs Gate III is that they decided to go with Astarion first, whose fandom is incredibly racist, mean, gate-keepy and have far obfuscated his victimhood into something self vindicating

The "antisemitism isn't systemic" argument falls apart when you grasp the security costs borne by American Jews in just about every aspect of communal life. Nazis walking into synagogues with AR-15s are animated by the same Great Replacement Theory espoused by our Christian nationalist electeds.

Now, there are some PbtA and post-PbtA games that do take "acting under fire" as their core template, and build their resolution rules on top of it. Significantly, crucially, they add new systems that deal with the problem I'm describing. Blades in the Dark's position and effect, for instance...

Lethal injection is horrific in a very literal way but in a metaphorically fitting one - we embrace it because, while it is slow and likely painful, it doesn’t look as bad to outsiders as a firing squad

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

the whole point of experiencing art is getting to know the shape of others through the friction between their difference and mine. the paradox of art is, sure, in the end mostly all we find is a way to reflect on ourselves, but we can't get there without chasing after the grasping dreams of another!

Biden picked up the phone in 2021 and told Israel to stop bombing Gaza. Israel stopped immediately. They deliberately did not do that in 2023. Because they supported and agreed with every single bomb Israel dropped from 10/7/2023 to 1/20/2025

The time to stop it was Nov 2023 when Israel had already killed more Palestinian children than total Israelis killed on 10/7, ie they had extracted their pound of flesh, and also freed most hostages via negotiations. Everything past that was pure genocidal revenge fully supported by Biden.

After the genocide, I will no longer accept that the squatting in homes, the apartheid, the theft, the mass graves, the childrens’ body parts in grocery bags, is secondary. Many of us no longer do. It didn’t work when we did anyways.

If your first instinct is to reach for the obscure origin of a commonly-used phrase rather than being struck by the genocidal fact of how many Palestinian children Israel killed in a few short weeks, you should think about whether you are actually concerned about dehumanization or not.

Judge Roy Altman boasts about taking '10% of the entire federal judiciary in America" on trips to Israel, and promotes his genocide-denying book from his chambers.

Add it up and Israel would have run out of basic munitions, not even mentioning sophisticated PGMs, within 1-2 months of just the Gaza war in 2023, just weeks into their ground invasion.

Artillery shells? You guessed it. We diverted pre-positioned stockpiles from going to Ukraine to Israel. Israel can't make anywhere close to what they were shooting at Gaza alone.

Former colleague of mine worked in Gaza for about 8 months during the genocide. Had a ton of pictures of discarded M830A1 MPT tank rounds with "MADE IN USA" markings. Tank rounds aren't even an especially sophisticated or expensive item, it's just Israel lacks the industry to produce them at scale

When you look at the weapons Israel does make "locally," you discover a complex chain of American and European companies and intellectual property and patents and development costs paid for by the US/EU taxpayer that get a "made in Israel" stamp at the very last step

I'm guessing the US C-17 to Russia also supplied a ton of weapons, because as we all know becoming the primary arms supplier of a country doing an illegal war of aggression is the only way to gain leverage over that country. What, do want *China* arming Russia?

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
