Again, free public college is essential but it doesn’t address the curricular issue. Free public college where you can only take humanities classes through a civic center is a problem. bsky.app/profile/ashe...

Exactly. The left is not resource poor. It just doesn’t invest in higher ed. It doesn’t invest using public funds. It doesn’t invest using private funds. It just doesn’t seem to care.

All the trends in public higher education are going in the reverse direction, it seems: demands to increase enrollments and majors without increasing faculty lines, the invasion of ed tech, seemingly permanent austerity conditions

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Democrats do not only need to "go all in" on higher education. The party needs a genuine reset on its understanding of it. The last three Democratic administrations contributed to creating the crisis that higher ed is facing today.

My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

Moulton repeated this smear every day for the last month. 3 days ago he even told a teenager this. The student of course found out that it was false. For close to a year he has lied about and attacked a trusted public servant with no positive message of his own. I look forward to his irrelevance.

that "Woke" is a silly academic nonsense that went too far is one of the baseline truths you're supposed to accept without poking at it if you want to be considered Serious. I think of Ta-Nehisi Coates with Klein; Black thinkers keep making themselves inconvenient to that politely empty conversation

I feel like this must have been done at some point, response poems are a storied tradition, but anyway I wrote "Margaret, Bringing Fresh Flowers" today and thought I'd share
Uncle Gerard, do you remember how,
when I was a kid, you found me crying
and I told you it didn't seem fair how all the nice leaves
had to die in the winter when I loved them so much;
and you told me, well, it gets worse from here,
and besides, it's not really the leaves,
you're a smart kid, they'll be back next spring,
but in the meantime you're right of course,
all kinds of things are going to die
and die and die and die and die and die,
your whole life, and it doesn't get easier,
it gets harder, because eventually you realize
all those dead hands go down pointing a finger at you,
and that's actually why you're sad, see,
because in a sense you're next,
even if it takes a while for next to get here?
And do you remember
how I said, Jesus Uncle Gerry,
can't a person be sad for a tree sometimes,
just sad about a tree?
Well, anyway,
you were probably right,
and you know this already,
because I tell you this every time I come here
but I suspect it's harder to remember things
where you are now
so I'm telling you again,
just in case.

I still believe that there is a labor movement that could change that. At least in some states. I do not believe there is a culture of labor among well employed faculty that’s even close to being willing to do that.

At an invitation-only gathering in Italy, white supremacists mapped out strategies to target rural America while local press coverage vanishes www.confrontthehate.com/p/white-nati...
As economic pressures gut local newsrooms across the country, white nationalist figures see an untapped opening: stepping into media deserts where there are few journalists left to sound the alarm.

“Local media has been dying all over America, which means that there’s essentially no real way to hold local governments accountable—and they can do whatever they want,” Kevin DeAnna told an invitation-only gathering of approximately 50 white nationalists in Rome.

Breaking into a broad smile, he excitedly added: “You should be fantasizing about this. This is a good thing.”

A few things: (1) AI should not be used to assist writing. Cognitive outsourcing is bad. (2) The college essay is on the decline because of labor as much as AI. Learning to write well requires a lot of personal contact which neoliberal logics of higher ed work against www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/u...

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

I talk a great deal about reading for pleasure; I’ve written elsewhere about the necessity of pleasure in the classroom, and why it is not an optional extra but the hallmark of true education. We must find ways to show children that reading gives you access to an inexhaustible source of delight. But I worry, too, that we are limiting the meaning of the word pleasure. Learning is a strange and discomfiting experience; it’s a struggle and a frustration, and epiphanies are rare. It is not always pleasure in its easiest sense.
