What I find baffling is the almost total blindness to the fact that children have their own reasons and motivations for doing or not doing things. It's not just about capacities.

Is "I do, we do, you do" the right vision of a lesson?
When teachers step into the classroom, we never act alone. There is no “I do”. Each of our actions is a response, a small arc, in a continual loop consisting of ourselves, our tools, and our students.

Absolutely delighted by this impartial review of my book published in the journal, School Science Review (open access): www.ase.org.uk/system/files... #EduSky #UKEd #SciTeachUK #iTeachBio
In the 20+ years that I have been teaching biology I have come across many texts that purport to transform classroom practice and improve student outcomes. However, rarely have I been so convinced by the power of a new theoretical underpinning for a pedagogical technique such as the one presented here. Moore-Anderson provides detailed discussions of systems theory, cybernetics and variation theory and their relevance to the biology classroom. Alongside the explanations, he provides concrete examples grounded in the classroom and over 40
diagrams that can be used to teach key topics.

The book starts with explanations of the underpinning theories he has applied to his teaching. This can, at times, be heavy going, and although the ‘key ideas’ are highlighted it can feel like there is a lot of information to absorb. However, as the book continues the scaffolding becomes clear and the reader can see how these ideas build towards coherent classroom strategies. It may be tempting to skip the theory at the beginning of the book and jump to using the diagrams in lessons; however, to be most effective it is important to understand the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ behind these.

Although this book is specifically about teaching biology, there are ideas that are relevant to teaching all science disciplines and it may have benefited from a collation of the ‘key ideas’ and ‘assumptions’ presented as they apply to teaching and learning of all sciences or all classroom settings.

Overall, Moore-Anderson presents a well-reasoned and compelling argument for the application of cybernetics and variation theory to the classroom. This is not an easy read, but, in my opinion, it is a thought-provoking read and a book that biology teachers should invest time in, to consider the theories, key ideas and diagrams, and how they could apply these in their own classroom.

I think this is the difference for me too. Beliefs, shaped by prior experience, are the thing that connects to the Ladder of Inference and (my ever favourite) model of teacher dev. These differences are where the same PD input is personalised (even if we don't see it) so it's important to recognise.
Clarke and Hollingsworth's interconnected model of professional development. The change environment is shown to have four domains of change: external, practice, personal and consequence; and arrows show the relationship between reflection and enactment between each.

Showing them practices ≠ mandating how they use them. That’s why it’s key to NOT frame those conventions as rules chiseled into tablets. They can/should be remixed, subverted, etc. but in ways that do so consciously. Less about good/bad & more about HOW/WHY they use/reject/remix those conventions.

Enacting Systems Theory: I've been designing a new Y8 (12-13 year old) biology curriculum. Here's a stock & flow model I've designed for teaching seed dispersal. It took a few iterations to get there, thanks to help from @musingsofadr.bsky.social @mrbates.bsky.social #SciTeachUK #iTeachBio #EduSci
A stock and flow diagram of seed dispersal. It has three stocks in sequence: Seeds on parent plant, dispersed seeds, and seedlings. The flows that join these are: Producing seeds, dispersing seeds, and germinating. There is another outflows from the stocks: dying.

The diagram focuses on the "dispersing seeds" flow and how that effects the "dying seeds" flow. The idea being the larger the dispersal distance, the lower the chances of competition between seeds, and predation.
