Mr. Trump’s choice to lead a mass pledge of allegiance to himself, followed by commanding his followers to cheat in the upcoming election, was unusual by presidential standards.

Congratulations to the New York Times' Euphemism Desk for coming up with a new one. Instead of stating that Maria Bartiromo was letting her guests lie, NYT says she was "permitting her guest commentators to free-associate." 1/2🧵
He had no such issues with Ms. Bartiromo, whose approach — at times permitting guest commentators to free-associate on live television — had not appeared to change much in the years since the Dominion settlement. Puck, a news website, earlier reported on Ms. Bartiromo’s conversations with Mr. Navarro.

First week of the new semester, and the students in my three courses are great! After decades as a reporter, I'm so grateful to have this second career at UT Austin teaching the next generation of reporters. Here's the statement on using AI for my "Covering Technology" students. TLDR: Nope.
"Yes, UT is making AI tools available to students. And all journalists need to know what AI is and how it works, especially since publishers are looking for ways to incorporate it in newsrooms. The New York Times, for example, uses machine-learning models for tasks like sifting through mountains of data for investigations, but NOT for writing stories. (Though some have slipped through.) So we’ll be talking about it – and some of you will even be writing about AI companies and discussing them with your classroom colleagues.

When it comes to using AI on your stories, though: that’s more complicated. This is a course about writing and honing journalistic writing skills; it’s not about using an algorithm to write. In elementary school, you probably weren't allowed to use a calculator until you could do the math with paper and pencil. Same here. So I will consider the use of tools like ChatGPT to write or revise your stories an act of academic dishonesty. Because while AI can write serviceable prose, it can't produce great journalism. That's up to you, and you don't learn the craft unless you start practicing it here. If you want to use AI to come up with story suggestions or other tasks, I'm okay with it — we can even discuss the results in class. I’d still rather see you develop your own story ideas, but using AI for that purpose won’t compromise your grade.

When it comes down to the writing, though, that's your job. Everything in your stories has to come from your own interviews, research and fingertips. And yes, I've caught people using AI, just as I've caught people inventing sources. It's no fun, and it's disappointing, and the disciplinary process is long and ugly — so please don't make things awful for both of us.

To sum up: if you use AI for any reason, you must disclose it.

The complicit subjugation of the Fourth Estate:
Sullivan: I think two things. One is that they’re very afraid of losing access to the White House. I mean, it’s their job not to, you know, sort of dig up dirt about the White House, or, like, really sort of get under the surface. It’s mostly their job to, you know, for example, be in the briefing room and ask a question, and then the evening news with David Muir, or whoever it may be will take that as a soundbite and show, Look, we’re, we’re doing our jobs here. So much of it is optics.

So some of it is losing access, not being able to, you know, do that, and some of it is just this strange normalization that has gone on for years now, in which the reporters seem to be saying to themselves, Well, he’s the president, and no one can argue with the fact that what the president does creates news. So we’re going to simply treat it as news. And if we need to do a little fact-checking or pushback, we’ll do that, but nothing that’s very radical. Whereas he’s radical, and so I think something much more powerful needs to be done in reaction to that. But don’t hold your breath.
