HOLY SHIT. We finally have a ruling on the Mental Health Act deemed consent constitutional challenge in BC. The judge ruled in favour of the plaintifs—the Council of Canadians with Disabilities. Deemed consent is unconstitutional. This is HUGE. www.bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/sc/2... @jacksonployal.com

Days like these I'm grateful I don't have a huge following, because the discourse elsewhere around this issue has been VILE. The court has NOT ruled the whole Mental Health Act unconstitutional, friends. Just the deemed consent part. The forced-treatment-without-capacity-assessement part.

Anyway, I'm pretty bummed at moment & try not to share when I'm feeling this down so I'll sign off. I know there are others who share my feelings about Rick Hansen and his foundation and I also know that I am one of the only who says things publicly bc I have nothing left to lose. Other are afraid.

This is pure grift. This is not how you create accessibility. Rick Hansen's brand wasn't even accessibility until there were govt funds on table. He was fundraising for a cure spinal cord injury & was given a platform by Brian Mulroney who wanted to BLOCK disability rights activism at the time.

Rick Hansen has been a hero of mine since I was a kid.
40 years after the Man In Motion World Tour first inspired a global movement, that same spirit is showing up at the highest levels of government.
Along with my fellow Premiers' and the Rick Hansen Foundation we are committing to:
Advancing accessibility nationwide
Harmonizing barrier-free standards
Applying accessibility best practices in publicly funded construction
Advocating for a National Accessibility Retrofit Fund
Supporting a national "Many In Motion Day" to share

Thank you Rick for a heroic lifetime of inspiration, advocacy and moving towards the dream of an inclusive and accessible Canada for all.

Hmmm, I'm detecting a theme in #ONpoli
Until March 25, Ontario had a 16-member committee that reviewed MAID deaths that had occurred in the province. The MAiD Death Review Committee was established by Ontario's Chief Coroner, Dr. Dirk Huyer, in January, 2024. It was described in a committee annual report that year as the first of its kind in Canada to have experts from different fields to "provide enhanced evaluation of MAiD deaths and to explore end-of-life complexities that have systemic and practice implications."

But the committee is at the end of its two-year term, and Dr. Huyer issued a call for new members April 2 in a document obtained by The Globe and Mail. The posting differs in several ways from the version issued in late
2023.

According to the new posting, the committee will have only six to eight members instead of 16. Members will meet five times a year, as opposed to the commitment in 2024 to meet 10 times. The new meetings will last two to three hours, compared with the earlier commitment to meet for four to five. The new committee will review 20 deaths a year. In 2024, the posting called for a review of 25 complex cases, although the coroner's office says only 14 were examined.

Membership in the new committee will be limited to those "interested in supporting MAiD practice," the posting from last week shows.

Language emphasizing "independent expert review" has been removed, replaced with a focus on providing "guidance to practitioners" and efforts to "support emerging MAiD practice."
