The anatomy of an AI-supported academic article is becoming more apparent. I desk reviewed ~70 manuscripts this week for our journal. Reckon 20ish had significant AI assistance. On top of hundreds of others recently I'm starting to see patterns. Are other editors are seeing the same or similar? 1/

I wonder why US outlets/organizations seem to think wildfire smoke holds Canadian citizenship? Most of those forests existed prior to the current country boundaries. And its not like the smoke is going to stop at the border.

You always know you're in trouble when you're doing qualitative research and the first line of reviewer feedback is "Generalizability is going to be an issue as the study is being done in BC (see detailed notes of reviewer 1)."

On Sunday afternoons, more often than not, my older sister and I sit in our separate homes (about 20 minutes apart) and send each other instagram posts and laugh and laugh and laugh. Instead of say, getting out of our pajamas and going out for coffee.

France recorded ~1,000 excess deaths during the record-breaking heatwave this past week, with 85% of the deaths being people aged 65 and over. The sharpest increase are people dying at home in the Île-de-France region that includes Paris and its suburbs.

I was told by our IT person today that the reason Teams doesn't work on my 2019 laptop is because my laptop is too old. I said I was insulted on behalf of my laptop, which I consider to be NEW. I still haven't fully moved over from my 2013 laptop. Computers are a scam.

I really miss the days when I could go on academic twitter and say that 1 focus group with 6 people does not a qualitative study make and have a nice dialogue about it. Too many people are doing 1 or 2 focus groups and calling it a day. Read your methodology papers people!

Looking at my annual arborist pruning bill, I think homes that have mature trees should get a climate tax break. New builds wipe all the old trees and leave barren landscapes of concrete. No obligation to replace trees. Mature trees keep our homes cooler so we're not using as much electricity.

My pet peeve about doing CIHR reviews is that they want reviewers to write a summary. The applicants have already written TWO SUMMARIES. Why? Why do I need to write one too? It's an absolute waste of energy and time.

It is interesting that for the #UBC Board of Governors elections, all five successful Faculty (3) and Staff (3) positions are filled by people who present as men. I think that 6/23 of the candidates present as women, a higher fraction in the staff category list.
