When it comes to housing, property rights are more important than human rights. Until that’s reversed, the housing crisis will only get worse.

Thinking of all who lost their lives fighting against the violent exploitation of capitalism this Labour Day. My ancestors who rebelled against enslavers were both capital AND labour, their fight for freedom continues to benefit us all. We honour them by continuing the fight✊🏽🌸

Uber just announced it will lay off 10% of its workforce, or around 3,300 workers. Last year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi made $35M — 360 times his median employee's pay — and announced a $20B stock buyback program to further enrich shareholders and himself. Textbook corporate greed.

Good for her. She was my preferred mayoral candidate, by a long shot, but something had to give in this messy political environment and I’m not surprised that she’s the one showing leadership here. Hopefully this ignites some necessary movement. #vanpoli

A message from Stephanie Allen. (1/3)
1 of 6. Red text on a grey background which reads:

"A message from Stephanie Allen.

Today, for the good of all people living in Vancouver, we have decided as a team to withdraw my candidacy for Mayor of Vancouver.

This decision isn't about me or about COPE.

It's about the people of Vancouver. And the people need us to defeat this right-wing government and reduce the harm being done by the sociopathic system we’re up against.

So while I am announcing the end of my campaign for Mayor, I am also recommitting to our common fight for Vancouver.

Ken Sim and ABC must be evicted on October 17th.

That's why I am strongly encouraging the other mayoral candidates in the race to also do the right thing, show integrity, and narrow the mayoral field to the person best positioned to evict Ken Sim."

COPE logo at the bottom2 of 6. Red text on a grey background which reads:

"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to stand as the mayoral candidate for COPE, a party with the deepest history of fighting the power of the super rich and showing up for the poor and working class people in our city.

COPE is a party dedicated to telling the truth. We are a diverse cohort of shared purpose. We have the lived experience, academic accomplishments, systemic analysis, and practical knowledge to examine the problems facing our city at the root cause level and to craft policies that will create lasting solutions.

But just as importantly, we at COPE have the love to care about the struggles that families, seniors, youth, working people and ALL those who have been pushed to the margins are going through, and we can see how much worse it’s getting for everyone.

We will not put our egos ahead of doing the right thing for Vancouver. We know that it is mission critical to have one mayor on the progressive side and that it has to be the person best positioned at this critical hour, to win the election.

We need a majority progressive Council, School Board, and Park Board to undo the damage done by this bad mayor and the bad mayors that came before him. "

On the passing of a great warrior & fighter for liberation, Joan Phillips.
Two weeks ago I had the honour of being invited by Joan Phillips for a visit at her home. She was so welcoming & generous with her time and stories. I was eager to ask her about how to remain a revolutionary while in elected office, and she didn’t disappoint. We talked about the power of our ancestors and the deeply urgent need for healing for all people carrying trauma over generations, both the colonizer & the colonized. My heart breaks for her loved ones to whom I send my sincere condolences. May the ancestors welcome Ms Joan home with love and in celebration of a life powefully lived.

Friendly reminder: economic policy drives social policy. We can’t “friendly capitalism” our way out of homelessness, poverty, crumbling health care infrastructure, deteriorating education systems, or climate collapse. The sooner we accept this, the sooner we can get down to business.

Surely this plebiscite has NOTHING to do with the fact that only 3% of Vancouver residents strongly believe ken Sim and ABC are taking the city in the right direction. Total coincidence.
Graphic from leger360.com showing that 3% strongly in right direction, 26% somewhat compared to 32% somewhat wrong track and 30% strongly wrong track. Total is 30% right direction and 63% wrong. The right direction side is red, while bar graph for the wrong track is black

Its time we accept that our governments don’t view housing as a human right. They do respect property rights, as we saw when ABC councillors expressed empathy for home owners facing negative impacts from the Villages Plan. But in the same week, renters at Myron Manor were given zero consideration.
