There are loads of things I like, and I try to talk only about them, but sometimes, y'know, the state of (*waves arms vaguely*) all that stuff...

Latest far right malign effect - unfounded accusations of immigrants stealing wild birds to eat have led to a physical assault on a volunteer rescuing a cygnet. The Greenwich Wildlife Network statement is long, but worth a read - it's thoughtful, courageous and impeccably argued:

Is this true? I mean, I only have anecdotal evidence, but "let the islanders decide" seems a pretty common viewpoint. That's not the same as "don't care".

DVDs aren't low-tech. They're just things you can actually own, that won't disappear overnight, that don't require a monthly subscription, that won't suddenly get reedited, that won't start putting adverts in the middle and that won't sell your data to the worst people in the world.

To be fair, Apple (and the lower-profile but ethically far more defensible Qobuz and Tidal) now offer even higher-quality options, but the majority of their catalogues will have been mastered for CD anyway, so won't benefit from that capability.

CD and DVD being described as "low-tech" here. To clarify: CD quality, since 1982: 44100Hz, 1411kb/sec Until very recently (Apple in 2021, YouTube and Spotify in 2025) major streaming platforms only offered the highest mp3/AAC quality: 44100Hz, 320kb/sec. Amazon is still 256k max.

The expression of the quantity in tonnes is confusing, and presumably intended to obfuscate, but regular US consumption would get through that in a few days. Two ridiculous men.

So, if my quick calculations are correct (based on US daily diesel consumption of 3.7 million barrels per day, and this *weight* of diesel equating to ~13.7 million barrels)... he's given Putin a massive PR fluffing for less than 4 days' supply.

Trump announces deal for Russian diesel as Zelensky calls it a 'gift to Putin'
Ukraine's president sharply criticised the move, calling it an "investment in war that must be ended, not prolonged".

Also does he realise how much "AI assisted recommendations" are going to (a) scare off the desired younger audience, already highly suspicious of AI, and (b) confuse and frustrate the core older audience, who are less flexible with UI tweaks?

In 1927, The Jazz Singer made movie history with the first recorded dialogue on film - but new evidence suggests the first feature talking film was Scottish.

First impressions: very similar to Lightroom, but faster. Layout basically the same, although Develop controls (right panel) are a bit more spaciously laid out... too much so for me, although that's just personal taste. Not quite the level of UI control, but still early days. Very promising!

If you're only familiar with LotSW when it was a cosy Sunday evening family favourite (Seymour era onward, I guess*) you'll be surprised by the first series. Well worth finding. (*Oddly, I don't recall seeing it before that, or maybe the end of Foggy's first stint. Maybe we watched something else)

Apart from the obvious connotation, this is really not how you get people interested in animal welfare, veggie diets etc. Faced with shock imagery, people recoil and soothe themselves with more pleasant thoughts, meaning you've lost their attention.
