When Owen was very small, before he was “Owen” at all, he lived in the old church in the woods with the other orphans, playing in the weeds amongst the crumbling headstones, eating cold tinned stew and peaches in syrup. They were wild things with dirty faces, but never truly without guardians, for the wolves watched them always from the woods encroaching like a rising sea.

The manor was in sight, and the guards were the optimal distance away. It was time to make my move. Running up to the wall, I was already reaching to my back, unzipping the pack and unrolling the contents inside. The first obstacle was a wall of enchanted ivy with supernaturally long thorns. The solution? Cover the thorns. I unfurled a thick blanket over the wall, using the thorns to hook it into place. Rostoyan's money made sure I was able to afford an extra thick one, and I scrambled to the other side of the wall like it was nothing. Low magic solutions were always preferable to needless uses of the arcane. Sure it was harder, but it conserved strength and had less of a chance of an unforeseen reaction. It took some yanking and flapping to get it off, and there were bits of it left on the wall, but nobody would be able to see it in the dark.

#SundaySnips - TURN From the STONES OF AYOR series I'm trying to write, based on the fantasy RPG video game from LEVEL UP. Sammy (Luscoe) uses his skills at circumventing locks to get them into an old ruined temple.

Luscoe continued to turn pieces of the lock until a carved-out shape appeared in the centre of them, a shape that closely resembled a hand print. Hadley watched, fascinated, as Luscoe pressed his hand into the indentation, and the whole mechanism clicked forward, illuminating with blue magic before splitting the door open wide.
“Well,” Luscoe said, brushing off his hands with a satisfied nod, “it’s not the most high-security, but I guess it would stop anyone without an ounce of sense. Or hands.”

#SundaySnips From an urban fantasy WIP currently on the backburner. The start of one of the plotlines. Something is causing blessings (and curses, as the protag learns later) in an area to start glitching out.

“They’re being answered. But they’re coming out wrong.” He picked one. A request for a good performance at a new play’s opening night. The actor put on the performance of his life, only for a light to fall and catch fire. He pointed to another; a child praying for a puppy. Somehow that turned into a mob of squirrels occupying their porch. A prayer that had been marked to be ignored somehow resulted in an entire high school basketball team getting sick before the regional finals, exactly as one desperate player hoped for.

A vast, worm-like creature with massive red teeth reared up and emitted a deafening gooooooosh sound as it bared its claws.
Wendy sighed. “Okay, wanna have another go at that?”
The behemoth launched itself forward with surprising speed only for its head to explode in a blast of thick black pulp. The body thudded to the ground, Wendy tackling Dido out of the way just in time before an avalanche of viscera spilled from the wound.
Wendy looked up. “Shit. That could have hurt.”
“Mmmfff.”
“But hey, I saved you! Again! What a nice bonding experience.”
“MMMfff.”
“Really makes you feel close— Oh, should I get off you?”
Wendy climbed off Dido who removed her face from the mud, gasping.
“Uuuhhg,” she announced.
“Good point!” Wendy said, thoughtfully. “If I didn’t know any better—”
The huge man who had accompanied Dee appeared through the trees, holding a smoking rifle. He grunted.
Wendy leapt up. “Keller! I take it Sweet Dee is getting impatient to move on.”
“Camp’s this way,” he growled, indicating the opposite direction to what Dido had chosen. He sniffed the air irritably. “She’s covered in shit.”
“UuuHHNG!”
“Slipped, poor thing,” said Wendy. “Do we have towels?”

#WIPSnips Substituting “tuck and roll”. MC is being chased by the bad guy’s main enforcer. So he’s going to do something he would normally never do; call the guards. For context, they’re in a forest city, so fire will draw attention.

I managed to tuck and roll on resolidifying so the landing only hurt a lot instead of breaking something, and once I was on the ground I shouted at the top of my lungs; "ARSONIST!"

Ooooh, I like this idea. “Cacophony” is, ironically, a fun word to hear and say. People should use “buffoon” as an insult more. Same with “twit”. Short and sweet. More things should be “serendipitous”. “Incalculable” is another fun one to say.

I was too young to really understand what was happening when playing NES games. I was just pressing buttons and liking the noises and flashes. This was when I started *getting it*. And it's what started my love of RPGs.

#SundaySnips Gonna have to go with vibes. Getting a quick bite to eat on a day with a cool breeze. A thief is casing a gallery at a university and decides to make the most of the situation and try the some street food. The other vibey one I had in mind was a WIP on Earth in April, not fall. 😔

The university had all sorts of neat little eateries around, so I had plenty of choices. Too many, in fact. I had no idea what was actually good around these parts. Then again, I didn’t have to pay for my room, so I could afford to try something. I settled on some cart that was selling specially carved and spiced slices of some oblong purple fruit. The skin was hard enough to be closer to a shell, which I found out the hard way when I bit into it. This got some passing by students to chuckle at my expense, and I grumbled looking for somewhere to sit down.

If a magic practitioner gives you an explanation of their powers using a poetic comparison, do not try to find some technicality to try and explain their own powers to them. Every user of the 4 elements hurls a rock at people making periodic table jokes reflexively at this point. I promise you, they've heard it all before.

#pretendpanel Despite listing some of my favorite narrators, I have no idea who would best fit my own works. But I’d go for one or two narrators depending on POVs, not individually casting every single character. Aim for a “someone reading to you” vibe over “big audiodrama” feel in most cases
