#LitHodgepodge 7 This one’s a bit hard for me because I use a lot of dialogue and stay in the character’s head. Or I’ve been writing a lot of epistolary stories that are nothing but spoken words (transcripts of meetings/court cases, video subtitles). But here are some from WIPs at different stages.

“We're not here to bring him up, Miss..." I said, offering a hand.

"Diedra." She replied, gripping it in a way to make the icy grip linger after she stopped squeezing. I had dealt with all manner of psychopomps, but the cold hands were a universal aspect. She paused and drew the hand back. "Really? No comment?"

"It's your name. What is there to joke about?" I replied flatly. I knew the answer, but jokes about nominative determinism grew old during the course of a mortal childhood, let alone our kind's eons of service. Poor Angelo.

It was funny; here in his moment of triumph, Trent was kicking himself for not realizing the solution sooner. Bugs. Bugs were always a part of the world of computers. It was a joke he shared with his fellow druids. They mocked him for tainting his connection with the Mother so he could live the life of a normal human, but that perspective let him see the path forward. How could the Circles ever hope to fight what they refused to understand? They railed against the avarice of the modern world without bothering to know how the machine fed itself. Trent understood. So now he was going to starve the machine.

#SundaySnips I'm surprised I had the specific word this time. I was positive I was going to have to use a synonym. A thief is gathering intel on the location of the first heist; the estate of one of the city's founding families. Sadly it hasn't reached "abandoned haunted mansion" status yet.

He took the coins and slid them over to his side of the table. “We’ll start with the easy stuff. His estate is in the middle of the second level, on the southern side. You’ve probably passed it a few times. The family gave back most of the land, reworked it into a public park, and walled off the part of it that still belongs to them.” I raised an eyebrow while trying to recall. I’d walked through the park a few times; one of the few spaces where there were trees growing in that sector. A quaint trail for people to enjoy a replication of old world nature and space for kids to run around and play. The mansion was out of the way for those out on a stroll, and it always seemed a little eerie. It was too well-maintained to be spooky, but it just seemed so old-fashioned and out of place. Never thought about who owned the place.

The manor was in sight, and the guards were the optimal distance away. It was time to make my move. Running up to the wall, I was already reaching to my back, unzipping the pack and unrolling the contents inside. The first obstacle was a wall of enchanted ivy with supernaturally long thorns. The solution? Cover the thorns. I unfurled a thick blanket over the wall, using the thorns to hook it into place. Rostoyan's money made sure I was able to afford an extra thick one, and I scrambled to the other side of the wall like it was nothing. Low magic solutions were always preferable to needless uses of the arcane. Sure it was harder, but it conserved strength and had less of a chance of an unforeseen reaction. It took some yanking and flapping to get it off, and there were bits of it left on the wall, but nobody would be able to see it in the dark.

#SundaySnips From an urban fantasy WIP currently on the backburner. The start of one of the plotlines. Something is causing blessings (and curses, as the protag learns later) in an area to start glitching out.

“They’re being answered. But they’re coming out wrong.” He picked one. A request for a good performance at a new play’s opening night. The actor put on the performance of his life, only for a light to fall and catch fire. He pointed to another; a child praying for a puppy. Somehow that turned into a mob of squirrels occupying their porch. A prayer that had been marked to be ignored somehow resulted in an entire high school basketball team getting sick before the regional finals, exactly as one desperate player hoped for.

#WIPSnips Substituting “tuck and roll”. MC is being chased by the bad guy’s main enforcer. So he’s going to do something he would normally never do; call the guards. For context, they’re in a forest city, so fire will draw attention.

I managed to tuck and roll on resolidifying so the landing only hurt a lot instead of breaking something, and once I was on the ground I shouted at the top of my lungs; "ARSONIST!"

I was too young to really understand what was happening when playing NES games. I was just pressing buttons and liking the noises and flashes. This was when I started *getting it*. And it's what started my love of RPGs.

#SundaySnips Gonna have to go with vibes. Getting a quick bite to eat on a day with a cool breeze. A thief is casing a gallery at a university and decides to make the most of the situation and try the some street food. The other vibey one I had in mind was a WIP on Earth in April, not fall. 😔

The university had all sorts of neat little eateries around, so I had plenty of choices. Too many, in fact. I had no idea what was actually good around these parts. Then again, I didn’t have to pay for my room, so I could afford to try something. I settled on some cart that was selling specially carved and spiced slices of some oblong purple fruit. The skin was hard enough to be closer to a shell, which I found out the hard way when I bit into it. This got some passing by students to chuckle at my expense, and I grumbled looking for somewhere to sit down.

All three faces lit up once they took a bite. Maxi let out a little chirp, wolfing down the meal in a way that signaled they were done with conversation until every crumb was gone. Ginra tilted her head and talked as she chewed. “I know the spice. I just can’t pin it down.” She was taking a few smaller chunks and trying to analyze it, sniffing one and licking another. Shogum grunted at her before she went back to eating normally. Weirdly enough, the giant was the one with the best table manners, a calm smile on his face as he savored the meal.

“Kosoléan.” He said after he swallowed. “At least that’s the main one. Kicks the same way, anyway.” After another bite, he continued. “Don’t know how she got a hold of it. Even if she’s growing it at home, it must have been a pricey venture to get the seeds for the plants from the mountains to here. And that wouldn’t be enough to use constantly.”

“Ash ain’t the only one with trade secrets.” Toka said with a wink. “And that’s one heck of a tongue you’ve got on you, big man.”

“Years of travel.” He replied. “You get to know your favorites.”

-In a game that starts with 20 Life, one player had 41 and the player about to lose had 282.
-Using a card to make opponents remove a number of cards from the deck equal to the number discarded. A play had been done before to remove half, so now the other half is being removed. When a player has no cards in the deck, they lose the next time they have to draw.
-Both sides have a large quantity of creatures, both with a wide range of power from the lowest at 1 to double digits, which is hard to get.

"But it messes with our naming scheme!" Firecrest countered. "We all just go by the bird name, and you mess up the flow of it!"

"Besides, we wouldn't use "The" in casual conversation." Yellowhammer added.

"It sounds fine, I just need to go last. It's Oriole, Firecrest, Yellowhammer and The Jay!" She said, counting her fingers. "See? It flows just fine!"

"Yeah, but that's just because you've got the only monosyllabic name!" Firecrest argued. "It just feels out of place! Either all of us do it or none of us do, isn't that right, Null?"

With my spirits lifted and belly full, I made my way further into the city, heading towards the Spine. I didn’t have any method of keeping the time, but it was probably close enough for one of the lifts to be arriving. All along the city were little circular zones where magically boosted platforms rose and fell to transport citizens between the layers of the city. Depending on the traffic of the area, the lifts could arrive in intervals between 30 minutes and an hour. If you wanted rapid transport on lifts that arrived every 10 minutes, you went to the Spine. The central pillar of the city had so much going through it at any given moment that it was almost impossible to really think about; pipes to move water, lifts to move citizens, steel rods with libraries worth of arcane text carved into them, all to keep everything flowing at once.

#SundaySnips This happens right after the description of the new city the team is travelling to. A big, walled-in forest with plates across the top to make it like a terrarium with one extra big tree sticking out. A bit "reading the guidebook" here, but the one expositing is a magic nerd.

“How does a city like this even exist?” I thought out loud.

“Folks could ask the same about Highbridge.” Ginra replied. “But I get what you mean. The logistics wouldn’t make sense at first glance. But I’ve been here enough times to get some ideas. They trade lumber to other cities and use their own internally generated magic infrastructure to rapidly grow new ones. Still takes a while, but not the decades one would normally expect. Apparently they’ve turned that titan in the center into a power source, both to support the city and to stop it from growing any larger and disrupting the current architecture. My bet? Excess sunlight absorbed by the leaves.”

“Your bet? You mean you don’t know?” I said, turning around now that I had an excuse to unglue my eyes from the city in the distance.

“A constantly roaming courier isn’t exactly the sort of person officials would have a detailed conversation about magical engineering with. They think I either wouldn’t get it or assume there’s some sort of espionage going on.” She shrugged, clearly having gone through both options at least once.

#WIPSnips This one was evil. My characters sigh a lot, have stealth bits that deal with sight and look for insight. A thief is fleeing the city and trying to lay low. Unfortunately, one of the guides instantly clocked him as suspicious. But he's not the first guy on the run they've escorted.

“Look… you aren’t the first guy we’ve escorted who was running from something. As long as you didn’t murder a child or something like that, we ain’t gonna judge.”

“And what makes you think I have any sort of trouble like that?” I said, giving her my best sneer. It didn’t work. In fact, she seemed amused by my attempts to antagonize her.

“Buddy, you’re taking a last minute spot on a cargo haul with enough bags to carry by yourself.” Ginra said. “The arrangement was made last-minute, but not literally this morning, so you didn’t bribe one of the coachmen. Someone with connections called in a favor. And… well, let me put it bluntly, kid; you don’t look like the sorta guy who has the cleanest connections.”

I sighed and dropped the look. “I can assure you it won’t be a problem for you, your associate or any of the other travelers. And I didn’t murder anyone.” I was a little angrier with that last part than I intended to be, but I took my nearly-perfect no-death policy seriously.

#FaveLineFriday #writesky VERY early stages here. Writing without dialogue tags to practice making voices distinct, and I’m planning to redo this as a court transcript when it’s done. More superhero stuff. The trial of a Punisher-like character accused of trying to start a new criminal syndicate.

The attempts to paint my client as some sort of aberration of the typical course of costumed vigilantism falls apart when you consider how much business proceeded as normal until the targets escalated.

Normal? After what she did to The Optomitrist? To The Seductrix? To The Crimson Drake? For God's sake, that guy's gimmick was he and his goons dressed like a bunch of edgy DUCKS and she-...!

The witness will be seated and calm down!

#WIPSnips From the epilogue of the fantasy WIP. A switch in POV to the main villain trying to get over some setbacks caused by his underlings failing. He’s consoling himself by redecorating his new manor. Making himself feel at home.

(...) Delegation is necessary. There's a limit to what a single person can accomplish. But when you delegate, you must acknowledge the possibility of failure. So you mitigate the damage of potential failure. Balance costs and rewards. Take the losses, learn the lessons and move on. That is the way of a ruler.

He unclenched his teeth and loosened his grip on his watch. Frustration had mounted to unacceptable levels. The mantras weren't working. His hands were too idle. Perhaps the garden should be moved higher on the to-do list. Yes. That's it. Because while there's always something important to be done... one must remember to take time out for one's self.

The Forever Shade Inn was located right in the middle of the eastern side of the second level, surrounded by much larger establishments, including the central pillar, leaving it in shadow all day. Or at least it would if it wasn’t for the streetlamps and artificial lights at the city’s ceiling, but why let that get in the way of a gimmick?

“Look. At that corner.” She guided the flame towards where she had been looking, lighting it up. We were all straining to see it when she sighed and pointed at a specific spot. “A glyph. Something enchanting the wall.” We just looked at her, hoping this had given her an idea, but she just shrugged. “It’s the symbol for “portal” or “entryway”. Common one for locking mechanisms or windows, since that’s what you’re trying to bar entry from.” She started hovering around the wall looking for more. “Nothing but the same marks across the side of the wall. It’s like finding a hinge.”

“Well, we found a point in the magic. Can’t we just have Shogum bash it with his shield and negate it?” Maxi asked. Ginra answered for me.

“We don’t know if the magic is what keeps it closed or lets it open. If we make the wrong call or negate the wrong part, it might just be closed off forever.”

#SundaySnips Going with vibes, where a splash happens. From a fantasy side project. A clash at sea in the middle of a storm, with a big summoned monster trying to attack one of the two fighting ships, climbing up its side. The finishing blow from the other ship's magic user.

The wings flapped and both hands threw fistfuls of the light dust. Shards of glass with white tails and compressed motes rained down like a shower of falling stars on the conjured creature, many digging into the shell, but enough striking limbs, tendrils and the eye. The white cracks spread more and more across its body before the light’s power burned it beyond its pain threshold, and it fell back into the sea. The rain of shooting stars continued, bombarding the monstrosity until the forces that kept it tied to this world came undone, its body dissolving into shadowy ichor, the remains churned by the waves between the two ships.

#WIPSnip Substituting “shoeprint”. The week’s words lined up so that I can post the follow-up to the last snippet I posted; the two detectives get their hands on the gunman with a bluff. Still in very early stages, so how much of the bigger mystery unfolds between points A and B is up in the air.

“How? How did you know I was here?” the panicking mechanic said, kicking his feet around in the air futilely.

“I had some contacts ask around about what places were hiring folks who got laid off the assembly lines.” Baker said, staying behind Theo. “Got a decent list. Then we just walked up to the shops and gave this speech loud enough for everyone inside to hear it.”

“So you were just gonna take the shoeprint of every mechanic in the neighborhood?” He wheezed, trying one last kick.

“You think Scotland Yard just hands out forensic kits to anyone who asks?” Theo said, a bit of cockiness in his voice now that he had a perp firmly in hand. “We didn’t have it. But the perp would know what it was and why that should worry them. And a green killer wouldn’t know to keep his head down and mouth shut. So now we get to have us a nice little chat.”

#WIPSnips From a detective story. One of the pair makes an observation; the gunman in the inciting incident wasn’t a professional killer. He knows a little bit, but made some amateurish mistakes.

"He had brought his own work clothes." Baker said, pressing an index finger to his temple. “Worn, ragged gloves. Might have affected his aim, but he knew of modern forensic techniques. If they were procured for the crime, he would have had something thinner. His trousers were also stained. Oil, grease and other types of machine-based grime. A mechanic."
