I closed my eyes, bringing my fingers to my temple. “Isabella. You know I love you—”
“Okay, evasive.”
“—and you’re like, the wind beneath my wings or whatever—”
“Don’t start that shit.”
“—but did you seriously just ask me if I think your ex-boyfriend is a total smokeshow?”
She let out a wistful sigh through her nose, staring into the middle distance. “Hottest guy I’ve ever dated. Hands down.”
As her boyfriend I probably should’ve been offended by that, but it was basically an objective statement. Noah looked like he’d been genetically engineered to drop panties. He looked like his panty dropping abilities had become so powerful the project had been shut down by the government and he’d escaped in a lab explosion.
“He’s like a seven,” I said.

Good Lord, but he was stunning. There was something so intimate about the way he spoke to the camera, something enticingly domestic, like they were chatting across the breakfast table with legs tangled up underneath. Malcolm couldn’t shake the sensation that he might easily reach out, brush a stray hair from the young man’s forehead, skate a finger over his cheek.
“Oh, little darling,” he muttered aloud to himself, a ring of helplessness in his voice. “What in the hell are you doing here?”
Onscreen, Lark’s eyes startled wide and flashed to his webcam, creating a quick, hot jolt of false eye contact. A grin spread molasses-slow over his face, disbelieving and almost goofy in its broadness, his eyes squinting and nose adorably crinkling up. Malcolm felt like butter dropped in a warm pan, his throat constricting, the long-rusted gears of puppy love giving a horrible gritty squeal in his chest.
“Oi!” Lark said. “You’re the one that clicked on me, mate. What in the hell are you doing here?”
Malcolm’s heart stopped.
He went still as a prey animal. Stared at the screen. Blinked hard and fast, as though to rouse himself from a nightmare.
“Oh, God,” he creaked out, horrified. “Can you hear me?”
Lark brought his fingers, half concealed in the sleeve of his jumper, to his lips. There was smothered laughter behind his voice, but no cruelty; it was soft, gentle. “Yes, pet, your mic is on. First-timers get ten free minutes of audio—now boys, don’t make fun—he’s new—"
