One way tech oligarchs retain power is through dual-class shares, allowing them to cash in on public stock markets without giving up power over their companies. @ryanlcooper.com thinks this needs to end: Dual-class shares should be banned, or taxed in proportion to founder control over the company.

FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Filtering doesn’t take decades, growth in housing production can offer affordability benefits for new buildings within a few short years. Much work to be done. This doesn’t mean we don’t need more reforms or more subsidized housing money. But skeptics of filtering are lazy/lying to you.

W/o getting drawn into the "seriously or literally" / "it'll never happen" trap, we need to stomp *hard* on the continuing effort to undermine Article 1 power of the purse by saying that this or that revenue stream makes something outside the normal budget process. 1/ www.nbcnews.com/business/eco...

social media overcame a lot of coordination problems for stupid people with bad ideas and allowed them bypass gatekeepers who knew better. now they're viable constituencies that can actually hold elected officials to account. this may kill us all.

imo pretty bleak how the concept of social murder has been adulterated to the point where people online use it as a justification for literal murder. Part of a recurring problem online where critiques of social structure get collapsed into critiques of particular agents.

The media relentlessly promotes the narrative that progressives are too mean to anti-vaxxers and we must bring them around with compassion. This isn't true and isn't helping. The more public sympathy you show them, the more empowered they are in their beliefs. www.statnews.com/2026/08/19/s...

Medical misinformation is one those phenomenona that dispels your belief that if things get bad enough they will self-correct; people often (usually) double down on their delusions rather than admit they were wrong, even when it's actively harming them. bsky.app/profile/luck...

Contemporary philosophy is full of inveterate Realists whereas I'm instinctually anti-realist. (Atoms, void, and class-warfare are the only primitives; everything else is fake.) But where this comes out most is that to me it's just *obvious* that metaphysical realism about moral value adds nothing.

Beliefs in conspiracies cannot be shaken by anything. Denials are interpreted as confirmations. "Full disclosure" only raises suspicions that something is being hidden. This is inherent in the logic of conspiracies.

Now, just so no one feels im not being fair, let's steelman an argument from earlier: while it is stupid to summarise this as "no progressive movement has ever gone too far," it is actually incredibly hard to convincingly argue that 2010s Western cultural liberalism went too far.

The last bit of the screenshot is especially peculiar. You don’t have to agree with Burke to think the French Revolution “went too far” (not even Burke’s position, but I digress). You can just agree with Benjamin Constant, i.e. the defining figure of French liberalism. bsky.app/profile/vand...

I don't point this out nearly often enough or in a way that would connote the intensity of the feeling but I really can not convey how much I hate that self-proclaimed liberals are very often illiberal and almost never motivated by liberal political-philosophical principles.
