“awful people don’t deserve to be killed, but they don’t deserve to be praised, either” is apparently a thought too complex for the pundit mind

If there's one thing that domestic violence research has taught me, it's that abusers set up no-win scenarios. They punish you whether you cooperate with them or whether you push back. The only way out is to strengthen ties with people outside of the relationship who can create new, better options.

I will just put this out there. If all the senators who are saying they want to block this bill really wanted to badly enough they could force Schumer's hand. This isn't 'if Mike Pence has courage'. A leader doesn't buck the overwhelming majority of his caucus. Doesn't happen.

THIS FIGHT IS NOT OVER. TOMORROW MORNING: everyone MUST call en masse. Do you have a recurring donation to your Democratic Senator? PULL IT IF THEY ARE VOTING YES. We can still fight back!!

It's annoying how clearly this is going to play out. They gut the FAA. Therefore, the FAA can't do its job well because it was gutted. Therefore, they say "The FAA sucks, we have to privatize it." which is what Project 2025 wants to do. They're manufacturing the crises for their end goal.

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

Daily steps by countless people stabilize entire movements and keeps them on course. Don't take a step back. Add a call. Add a visit. Add yourself to a demonstration. Add a friend joining you for any of these. Keep up your momentum. Keep up our momentum.

for pity’s sake, I am BEGGING university leaders to stop framing this issue in terms of what this will cost the university. people dont care! EXPLAIN WHAT THIS WILL COST THE PUBLIC: closed hospitals and clinics, skipped treatments, loss of access to experimental drugs, unemployment, recession
sreenshot from the new york times reporting that Stanford University’s provost is talking about how the loss of funding from national institutes of health funding will cost the university $160 million. that’s not the way to get this changed — the people think “stanford is rich; no big deal.” leaders need to talk about what this will cost the public

I just realized that not everybody knows this, but one of the reasons funding mRNA flu vaccine research is so critical right now is because while we do have an existing vaccine for bird flu, conventional flu vaccines are incubated in chicken eggs.

One class I am teaching this semester is on Universal Design for Learning and a ground rule is to focus on your goal, and then you can move your pedagogical tactics around that goal. This, you can imagine, has been immeasurably helpful perspective for me at this moment.

The Republican Congress has surrendered. They are no longer a functioning co-equal branch of government. Democrats need to do everything to not cooperate. Use your position to slow their fascist takeover. The time of “bipartisanship” and “finding common ground” is over. Now it’s time to fight.

No one elected Elon Musk. As Donald Trump allows Musk to access people’s personal information and shut down government funding, Republicans in Washington will also own the consequences. We must do everything in our power to push back and protect people from harm.

You do not have to consume every single tiny piece of bad news in order to be a good person. It’s ok to miss things. Traumatizing yourself isn’t the same as activism. Bearing witness to the point that you’re paralyzed with fear and horror and fury isn’t going to help us get through this.

Why I always say: the most subversive thing a woman can do is to talk about her life as if it really matters. It does. www.feministgiant.com/p/daily-dose...
Text: The personal isn’t just political. It is kryptonite to patriarchy’s superman myth wrapped in fiction wrapped in nonsense: that one man with one action will change the world and not the millions and millions and millions of daily and personal acts of defiance, disobedience, and disruption. And it is because patriarchy wants us to believe we have no power that it dismisses our personal lives. Which is why I always say: the most subversive thing a woman can do is to talk about her life as if it really matters. It does.

for the @inquirer.com, I wrote about the importance of a free press to democracy and how it's not just investigation, scandals, & poll-driven predicting. Authoritarians don't care about scandals. We need to focus on bearing witness, humanizing, and contextualizing. Now with gift link ⬇️

1. How can great teachers do their work in a sustainable way, and why is is so hard to convince them it’s not only possible but will make them better teachers, too? 2. Why studying the benefits of art and humanities scientifically ruins art and humanities.

A Principal once said to me "my magic number is 6", if she got 6 people complaining/commenting/angry about something, it was the mandate she needed to take steps, even if the District didn't want those steps to happen. So we found 6 people every time we wanted something done.
