I work at a high-end clothing store and clocked in to my manager telling me about the most unhinged interaction from yesterday. Looking back, that run-on seems pretty unhinged. Basically I have seborrheic dermatitis and I have to use a motherfucking medicated shampoo now. Which, by the way, my insurance tried to DENY COVERAGE FOR. But I get so itchy without treatment that I unintentionally scratch my skin open!

I’ll also add that most of the heat should be directed at USA Today, but the journalists who participated in this breach of ethics also made a choice. Organizations are made up of people. We can’t absolve the people who do harm on the behalf of an organization.

As an expert on sexual violence, I have to add that these ethical violations are a nightmare for interviews on sensitive subjects. I would never recommend ANY survivor goes public with their story at an outlet that would do this to them.

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content. I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

The primary objective of journalism is supposed to be telling the truth. It is a DECISION on the part of USA Today to know that new details have emerged about this case and to refuse to update an old story that is still circulating and still shaming Jane Doe.

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

It’s hard to let go of. I think having that thought privately is part of how we cope, like how crying helps us process sadness. It sounds like you managed to keep it internal and do the right thing for the survivor in this case, so don’t beat yourself up now for also feeling that way.

I think that’s a natural response, to an extent. Our animal brains convince us that if we could hurt someone awful as badly as they hurt others, we could prevent it from happening again, or balance karma, or make them realize the error of their ways… even though we know it doesn’t work that way.
