US miner under further investigation after destroying WA habitat of black cockatoos, quokkas and numbats
Pressure grows on Alcoa over strip-mining of Western Australian jarrah forest, which also threatens Perth’s water supply * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast US mining company Alcoa’s strip-mining of Western Australia’s jarrah forest is under further investigation after its “deliberate repeat breach” of environmental laws that destroyed habitat for protected species – including black cockatoos, quokkas and numbats – and cost it $40m to avoid prosecution. The ongoing inquiry into Alcoa’s clearing at its Willowdale mine was revealed in talking points for federal ministers prepared ahead of the February announcement of a record $55m settlement for clearing at its Huntly mine. This is why I spend so much time focusing on historical / actuals. O'Leary's 9 gigawatt plant won't end up being 9 gigawatts. But 1 GW or even 500 MW of new gas power is a fucking disaster, and shrugging it all off as "mania" because it's not 9 GW is what these ultra-polluters want from us.
Exhibit C, a story from Tom’s Hardware:

New AI data center in Utah will generate and consume more than twice the amount of power the entire state uses — Kevin O’Leary’s 9 Gigawatt Utah data center campus approved

These stories are breathlessly reported, as if, by waving a magic wand of billionaire wish fulfillment, a gigantic data center will spring from the Earth. But there are other factors (remember, think dialectically) such as the impact of hydrocarbon supply constriction on the PCB supply chain and the lack of transformers.

…

The data center ‘boom’ or, more accurately, to borrow from Zitron, ‘psychosis’ is the final act in the inflation of the greatest of all bubbles, rivaling mighty Jupiter in size. Because the US is little more than a nuclear armed used car sales lot, commanded at every level by people looking for an angle, there is no one to stop this process.

Little note in the new Bill on Hate Speech Good thing there will never be a Minister who acts in bad faith when they go about banning groups.
Conviction not required
(4) A person does not need to have been convicted of a hate crime in order for the AFP Minister to be satisfied an organisation has engaged in conduct of a kind mentioned in paragraph (1)(a).

No procedural fairness required
(5) The AFP Minister is not required to observe any requirements of procedural fairness in deciding whether or not the AFP Minister is satisfied for the purposes of this section.
