I don’t want this. I’ve had an Apple Watch from the first day it was possible and I will stop having one if this ends up being unremovable.

Thanks to Doug Ford and Paul Calandra, 80,000 elementary educators have to order classroom supplies from Staples this year instead of from their school boards. I decided to do a little comparison shopping for school supplies many of us will have to order over the course of a school year. 🧵 #OntEd

Feeling haunted by your own ghost is honestly an absolutely perfect and beautiful way to describe so many struggles of chronic pain and chronic illness. (A beautiful description as a whole. 🫶🏻)

Well this is grim
weird interaction with a student this week. they kept coming up with weird "facts" ("greek is actually a combination of four other languages") that left me baffled. i said let's look this stuff up together, and they said ok, i'll open a search bar, and they opened... ch*tgptand i was like "this is not a search bar" and they were like "yes it is, you can search for anything in here"

the thing that made me feel crazy is like. every kid that's using this as a browser is getting new BESPOKE false "facts." this isn't "a widespread misconception about X that stems from how it's taught in schools." each individual kid is now hooked into a Nonsense Machine

with the "widespread misconception about X" you can start at a baseline. like, ok, in tenth grade we all talk about X thing from history, and that leaves us with some misguided concepts about X, but we can correct that as students get broader understandings of the world

but with this, each child is getting UNIQUE wrong facts they are SURE are correct... because they did what we told them to do! they "looked it up"! they got it from somewhere! it's not a kid making up a belief on hearsay and assumption... it's something they think they LEARNEDthis kid was extremely combative with me, and i understood why. i was sitting in front of him and telling him that the internet, a computer, technology, all these supposedly authoritative things... were wrong. and that i, one person, was right. he basically *couldn't* believe me.

he decided that i was simply a teacher who'd made a mistake. he could check it, after all! he could look it up! he could find the REAL facts. i obviously hadn't done that, i was just an adult who'd decided i was smarter than him. hence the defensiveness. like i said: i understood

it was so fucking rough. i did my best, but i am one person trying to work against a campaign of misinformation so vast that it fucking terrifies me. this kid is being set up for a life lived entirely inside the hall of mirrors

Me, 2015: Carnegie was a complete shit who, with Rockefeller, invested in reforming public education into a means of conditioning children for factory labor. Me, 2024: Eh, at least they believed in public education.

My favorite thing to do with friends who are engaged and gearing up to resist is remind them who doesn’t get a line in the “first they came for” poem and who got mass death tested on them to very little resistance at all. And they frown and pull out their phones and say “that can’t be right.”

I try not to judge famous people's works by whom they support politically. But it's really hard. Wayne Gretzky, Mike Tyson, Dana White, Zachary Levi, James Woods.... right now I can't bear to watch or support anything they're a part of.

Parenting right now feels so much like the week before i had surgery, when i needed to have faith in others, tamp down my terror, and help my kids find joy in a world that seemed completely featureless and cold. This is hard. There has been joy since that day, there will be joy again

Do not obey in advance.
Resist. Do not offer an oppressive government what it wants. Do not anticipate its needs and offer up what you think it wants. To do so teaches power what it can do.

This is quite the case. The woman's partner filed the injunction to stop MAID for a condition associated with changing doses of antipsychotic meds, which she was told is treatable & could resolve within months. B.C. judge halts woman’s medically assisted death bc.ctvnews.ca/b-c-judge-ha...
“In this case, (the woman) is actively pursuing death, over the objections of the physicians who actively treat her. She has come to B.C. because she was able to find someone in B.C. who would approve,” the notice of application says.

“This case raises serious questions about whether (the woman) in fact qualifies for MAID Track 2. Particularly concerning is that akathisia appears to be a cluster of symptoms connected to the changes in usage of drugs used to treat a psychiatric condition. It is treatable but (the woman) has not followed treatment recommendations.”

Fact we're in the 'Twenties' sounds so weird. It's so synonymous with the 1920s. Sounds like a bygone era when women were still fighting for their rights, the upper classes were living a life of hedonism whilst people starved & the world was on the verge of financial ruin and war.

I often say that the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s apathy. Every person who’s ever told me their own reason for not wearing a mask is more important than mine to stay alive? That is the diametric opposite of love. And it’s the default state of nondisabled society.

I can’t believe they ever included 2020 in a baseline. A novel pandemic year is hardly a suitable baseline for looking at long term trends. Interesting optimism for life expectancy. I’m expecting a J shaped curve.
A big increase in official life expectancy today as 2023 replaces 2020 in the 3-year average used in the calculation.

However, life expectancy remains below pre-pandemic levels (2017-19).

Life expectancy will predictably increase again next year (when 2024 replaces 2021).

Last Night is a movie from 1998, and describes how people deal with the end of the world There are the denilalists, the hedonists, those who find refuge in routine. I remember wondering what group i would belong to How strange to look back and understand how prescient this movie was
Screenshot of dvd movie cover for Last Night. The text reads: Last Night a film by Don McKellar. It’s not the end of the world… there’s still 6 hours left. There is a quote at the top of the image that says “one of the year’s best movies, period”. The image, taken from the movie, shows one of Toronto’s distinctive red and grey streetcars, teetering on its tracks. A lone human figure is walking down the otherwise abandoned street, carrying full bags in both hands

“Echo chamber” is often a dysphemism for a place where people have belonging that someone else wants to spoil. We all need to be aware of other beliefs and values, and learn and grow from them, but that should be up to every person when they want to be exposed to those things, never a requirement.
