A sobering, clear assessment in @pnas.org of the current US policy of international student exclusion. "The damage would not end with academic careers. A discovery becomes a vaccine, a company, and an industry only when someone commercializes it, and that work runs on the same imported talent."

Bangkok at breaking point as floods turn streets into stagnant lakes
With 40 dead and a disaster declared across all 50 city districts, experts warn extreme flooding will only worsen across south-east Asia Bangkok is used to absorbing the sudden afternoon downpours that inundate the city during the rainy season. Even streets in many central high-rise districts can briefly turn into rivers, with rats and cockroaches racing out of sewers and taking temporary refuge on trees and buildings as the subterranean world is flushed out. But every city has a breaking point, and this year rain fell so fast and so hard that whole neighbourhoods of the Thai capital have been transformed, not into rivers, but stagnant lakes. In parts of the city, roughly 300mm of rain – the equivalent of half a year of average rainfall in London – fell in about two days. Continue reading...

Econometricians always love poking holes in applied work just so they can publish papers and then like provide practical guides with examples on how you can instead use a better estimator with this free software package they wrote and it turns out they're also really nice in person.

What a searing treatment of how heat is changing the world. It's like the dystopian real world companion to the Ministry for the Future. I listened to the audiobook. Grim but captivating. Still much room to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change but a sobering read/listen.

Can anyone explain to me why a national permitting deal is best negotiated now, mere weeks from an election that is likely to reshape federal power? Let’s stipulate that a deal of some kind is necessary and good; my question is what about the situation makes now more desirable than, say, Q1 2027?

There's a whole tradition of "waulking songs" in the Hebrides with their own specific conventions, which would be sung communally by women around a table as they did the labour of working the cloth, with the tempo of the tunes increasing as the tweed softened.
