From the moment I met Edgar Tumiña, he was always surrounded by children. Tumi dedicated his life to rescuing kids who were recruited into armed groups, and preventing more from joining. I have been struggling to find words to write about his assassination on Saturday. Short 🧵

You could say this about so many things. USAID. Dept of Ed. But we have representatives in Congress who are elected to hash out these arguments and write the compromises into law. Either we do it that way, or we recognize that we are in a completely new country.

Hard to deny that the collapse of civic life is connected to: 1) the collapse of religious involvement among younger generations 2) the total collapse of local and regional news organizations. Everyone wants to solve the problem without reversing these two changes, but that's very hard.
