This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊
Line graph time series of daily global mean sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. This year is currently at record high for this time of year. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1, and the graphic is created by Climate Central at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings.

Irony is dead
An event flyer for London Climate Action Week, titled "Extreme heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world," features a background photograph of a dry, arid landscape with a road and mountains under a hazy blue sky. At the top, logos for the "Climate Resilience Alliance" and "London Climate Action Week" are visible next to a red "EVENT" tag, while the bottom of the flyer lists the event details—scheduled for 24 June from 09:30-12:00 BST at the Shaw Library, London School of Economics and online—alongside partner logos including LSE Grantham Research Institute, IFRC, Mercy Corps, and Practical Action. Stamped boldly across the center of the image in large, dark red, capitalized letters is the ironic overlay text: "CANCELLED DUE TO EXTREME HEAT."

This might be one of the funniest chart about energy scenarios I’ve seen. You can hardly see “actual” for gas
Winners and Losers
The IEA overestimated gas growth in Asia and underestimated solar

Gas
• Forecast 547 TWh
• Actual 17 TWh

Solar
• Forecast 465 TWh
• Actual 1,333 TWh

Note: Shows expected growth in Asian power generation between 2018 and 2025, based on actual 2018 generation, actual 2025 generation, and the 2018 World Energy Outlook's Current Policies Scenario estimates for 2025. Actual 2025 generation figures are from Ember.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Sad news, especially given the poor state of sea ice after this winter. Looks like we won't be getting any more data for Arctic sea-ice thickness and volume for a while from PIOMAS. See: psc.apl.uw.edu/research/pro...
Screenshot of text that says: "Important Notice (3/24/2026):
NOAA NWS/NCEP has terminated the NCEP/NCAR R1 reanalysis as of March 18th, 2026. NCEP/NCAR R1 has been used as the atmospheric forcing data in the PIOMAS reanalysis . We had not been aware of this change in service which was apparently formally announced Feb 13. 2026. This means that we will have to find alternatives and generate a replacement. It will take considerable effort and time to update data streams, re-calibrate the model and generate updated time series. We don’t yet have a good sense if that’s possible with available funds and if so, when we will be able to resume production of a new PIOMAS time series. While a replacement of the NCAR/NCEP R1 as the forcing product makes ultimate sense, we would have wished for a longer time period to facilitate the transition. We are sorry what this means to our many users. PIOMAS has been in production since March 2010 and we rarely missed updates by more than a couple of weeks (except for government shutdowns). This will be longer. Check back here for updates! "

More La Ninas! The RONI (Relative Oceanic Niño Index) is NOAA's new ENSO monitoring method (effective 2/2/26). It measures Niño-3.4 SST anomalies relative to the tropical mean SST (20°S–20°N), better accounting for global warming than ONI's updating 30-year baselines.

Raport NOAA dla stycznia 2026. January 2026 NOAA Global Climate Report www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monit...
The January 2026 global temperature was 1.12°C (2.02°F) above the 20th-century average, ranking as the fifth-warmest January since global records began in 1850. During January 2026, much-warmer-than-average conditions prevailed across much of the globe's surface, particularly in the Arctic, Greenland, northern and western Canada, the western U.S., Africa, southern and eastern Asia, and parts of Australia, where temperature departures exceeded +2.0°C (+3.6°F). Record-high January temperatures covered 7.0% of the Earth's surface, notably in Greenland, Africa, Asia, the Atlantic, and parts of the Pacific and Southern Oceans. In contrast, below-average temperatures affected Alaska, southeastern Canada, the eastern U.S., Europe, Russia, Antarctica, and parts of the tropical Pacific Ocean. The most significant cold anomalies occurred in Europe and Russia, where temperatures fell -2.0°C (-3.6°F) below average or lower. However, no land or ocean areas set a record for cold January temperatures.
