Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Good end-of-FY coverage by the Times. The amount of unspent funds has wiggled but it was pretty clear for some time now that NSF was simply not going to spend a substantial portion of its congressional appropriation this year.

One of the annoying effects of AI as a subject in higher ed is how much it brings out the worst of academic-brain. Like, yes, writing is not essential to higher-order thinking; western imperialists imposed literacy as a weapon and deemed cultures lacking alphabetic writing as inferior. It’s true!

Good and gutting. (No, really, it is very good—you should read it) David Perry, UMN student advisor, on what the university is for and how deeply the planned budget cuts will mess with that www.startribune.com/umn-cuts-sta...
And mostly, it’s worked out for the best. Even if we just assess for dollar value, a 2025 analysis found that for every $1 invested in the U, the state reaped $16.75. In other words, every Minnesotan benefits from our robust systems of public higher education.
It’s been striking to me that while conversation about the budget inside the U has been substantial, I haven’t yet seen Minnesotan politicians addressing these potential cuts as a crisis. Part of that is because public universities like the U have made a trade-off, growing increasingly corporate and independent (despite publicly appointed regents) as public funding has collapsed. As a share of the budget, state funding has plummeted over the decades, falling to about 15%, compared to 39% in 1997. If that’s what you want, then fine. But did we ever have a public debate about whether that’s what Minnesotans actually want?
If you don’t want to more significantly fund the university, which bits are you eager to cut away? If it’s instruction and student services, here’s what happens.

"SCHOOL TRANSFORMATION" PLAN:

"This decision is too big and affects too many families across the city to be made quickly.

This plan puts two schools in my district on the chopping block: Heritage Academy and Field Elementary, which has been open for more than a century.

The district has not made the case for these closures. Initial cost savings they have floated are insignificant to their financial picture, and no full analysis has been conducted of fallout effects.

This kind of major disruption deserves proper engagement from parents, educators and administrators, neighborhood and city leaders, and the current timeline doesn't allow for that.
The board should delay this vote and let those voices be heard.””
