Also, before anyone understandably asks, Grimdoomer's bona fides are legit and include major contributions to other scenes over the years, including the PS2 as well. And while it's unfortunate the code will remain closed source, it's hard to argue with the reasoning. I'd likely do the same here.

I have decided not to release the source code for this for a few reasons:

Everything I make and release I do for free in my own time. This is a hobby for me and something I do for fun. Given the state of software development I no longer feel the need to release the source code for everything I make just so people can make a million forks of it and kill any motivation I have to work on it. I make this stuff for myself and not anyone else.
The world doesn't need 15 "slopsoftmods". It took a LOT of work to not only develop this exploit chain but also package it into an easy to use installer and do testing to try and make sure it wouldn't break someone's console. Making these modifications to your console can cause it to stop working, and I don't see why someone who doesn't understand the risks, work it took to make, or how the OS functions, should be able to clone a turn-key repository, make one change, slap their name on it, and tell people "go download my softmod".

It's inevitable that people will just reverse engineer, modify, and repackage my work as their own. While my work may not be "perfect, bug free, etc.", I have taken utmost care to make sure it's unlikely to cause any harm to your console and that you should always be able to boot into retail mode to recover from anything that goes wrong. Other people copying my work may not do the same. If you don't trust the people making the modifications don't install them.

For those who aren't up to date on the 360 modding scene, this is a Big Deal. Believe it or not, until now, the 360 still never had a softmod and while some exploits in recent years had gotten most of the way, this is the real deal. You probably no longer need to solder your 360 to do Fun Stuff.

It does make me frustrated that I can't speak too much on coding as an artform. All I really have is trying to learn C# for half a year and finding it's actually a lot of creative work before it is a science that's not actually that far removed from writing a story or making a drawing.

Minimal Comments

This is a stylistic issue, but one beautiful thing that Doom usually does is not over-comment. I’ve seen way too much code that looks like:

I find this extremely irritating. I can tell what this method does by its name. If its function can’t be inferred from its name, its name should be changed. If it does too much to describe it in its name, make it do less. If it really can’t be refactored and renamed to describe its single purpose then it’s okay to comment. I think programmers are taught in school that comments are good; they aren’t. Comments are bad unless they’re totally necessary and they’re rarely necessary. Doom does a reasonable job at keeping comments to a minimum. Using the idSurface::Split() example, lets look at how it’s commented:

// splits the surface into a front and back surface, the surface itself stays unchanged
// frontOnPlaneEdges and backOnPlaneEdges optionally store the indexes to the edges that lay on the split plane
// returns a SIDE_?

The first line is completely unnecessary. We learned all that information from the the function definition. The second and third lines are valuable. We could infer the second line’s properties, but the comment removes potential ambiguity.

Doom’s code is, for the most part, judicial with its comments, which it makes it much easier to read. I know this may be a style issue for some people, but I definitely think there is a clear “right” way to do it. For example, what would happen if someone changed the function and removed the const at the end? Then the surface *COULD* be changed from within the function and now the comment is out of sync with the code. Extraneous comments hurt the readability and accuracy of code thus making the code uglier.
