A-level Further Maths teachers: if you're looking for mechanics questions, look no further than NSW's Extension 1 and 2 exams. Mechanics without calculus is in Extension 1, with a strong emphasis on projectiles. Questions taken from the last four years of exams. #ALevelMaths

In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some averages with fractions: interwovenmaths.com/averages-wit... This was one of the original Interwoven Maths tasks when the site launched, and I still love the different fraction skills it requires, e.g. finding the midpoint of two fractions in the third column.

Now I am no longer preparing students for GCSEs in Year 10/11, working in the French system, I find it so liberating writing assessments. No need to use past paper questions and I can develop interesting tasks which will really allow me to assess the student mathematically. Like this one.

What prompted me to update my website with the previous article is that I have another article in October's issue of Mathematics Today! tkbriggs.co.uk/think-education-math…
tkbriggs.co.uk
Think Education: Maths, History and Teaching (Mathematics Today (IMA))
When mathematics is taught, the focus is almost always on absolute rigour, formulae, and immediate practicality. But what happens when we look at math as a deeply collaborative, creative human endeavor? Co-authored with doctoral researcher Jason H. M. Yip, this article traces our journey from a practical classroom research project in a Milton Keynes secondary school to a much broader conversation about teacher collaboration, representation, and professional learning communities across the UK and Europe. Rather than treating the history of mathematics as a separate, isolated topic, this piece explores how we seamlessly wove historical narratives, biographical sketches, and classical artifacts directly into everyday Key Stage 3 lessons. By sharing our experiences presenting at various national and international conferences (ranging from research-focused meetings like the British Society for the History of Mathematics (BSHM) to teacher-facing events like #MathsConf39) we discuss the very real, practical challenges teachers face when trying to fit these ideas into tightly structured syllabi. Ultimately, it’s an invitation to bridge the gap between research and the classroom, detailing how we established the History and Mathematics in Education Network (HaMiEN) to help educators share resources and collaborate without adding to their curricular burden. ## Where to read it: The full article is published in Mathematics Today (October 2026, Vol. 62, No. 5, pp. 138-140). If you are a member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), you can access the full issue via the IMA’s Mathematics Today Archive. ### Share this: * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * ### _Related_

A few weeks ago, I posted a blog about following up worked examples by asking "What would happen to the answer if I changed the question slightly?" Here's another example of this from the blog. wp.me/p9t8DE-s8 #Mathschat #MTBoS #iTeachMaths #Maths
Initial question:

Find the mean, median, mode and range for the dataset:

12, 13, 14, 17, 17, 19, 20

Answers:
mean = 16,      median = 17,      mode = 17,      range = 8

What would happen if I changed the question?
What would happen if we increased the last number by 1 (20 to 21)?
Which summary statistics would change? Why?
Which summary statistics would stay the same? Why?

In #MathsToday, Year 8 have started a chapter on Ratio and Proportion. Certainly a contender for one of my favourite topics to teach. And it is one with a lot of particularly lovely NCETM Checkpoints to choose from - these are two highlights for me. www.ncetm.org.uk/classroom-re...
Checkpoint 19: Dough. Chapati dough uses 2 cups of flour for every 1 cup of water; pizza dough uses 3 cups of flour for every 2 cups of water. Six bowls contain: a) 9 cups flour, 6 cups water; b) 12 cups flour, 8 cups water; c) 12 cups flour, 6 cups water; d) 18 cups flour, 12 cups water; e) 24 cups flour, 12 cups water; f) 24 cups flour, 18 cups water. Students decide whether each is chapati dough, pizza dough or neither, then consider what could be added to change each dough into the other kind.Checkpoint 20: Imperfect meringues. A perfect meringue uses 150 g sugar for every 3 eggs. Five mixtures contain: a) 200 g sugar and 6 eggs; b) 450 g sugar and 7 eggs; c) 400 g sugar and 9 eggs; d) 500 g sugar and 9 eggs; e) 500 g sugar and 10 eggs. Students determine what must be added to make each mixture perfect, then consider other possible combinations, including whether a perfect meringue could use 20 eggs or 20 g sugar.

In #MathsToday, Year 10 were looking at the Product Rule for Counting. We looked at how subtly different scenarios lead to different calculations, each with different geometric/algebraic generalisations. I spent quite a while coming up with a context where all four variations felt meaningful.
Four-part task asking how many outcomes are possible when five students enter a music competition: awarding first and second place; choosing two winners; two judges each secretly voting for a favourite; and awarding Best Performance and Best Composition. The same four-part music competition task, illustrated using 5 × 5 grids to represent possible pairs of students. Coloured squares show which combinations are possible or distinct in each scenario.Generalisation of the music competition task to n students. The numbers of outcomes are shown as n(n-1) for first and second place, {n(n-1)/2 for two winners, n(n+1)/2 for two secret votes, and n^2 for Best Performance and Best Composition.
