In #MathsToday, Year 13 Further Maths had a lesson in the morning to revise for an afternoon Core Pure 1 assessment. I printed off a nice double-sided A3 revision mat. There's something about that format that I find feels more approachable than 50 questions in a list! interwovenmaths.com/mats/cp1

Would you be able to put a FREE Japanese language edition of The Mathematicians' Library to good use? I'll send it out to the first person who gives me a good reason why they should have it, and I'll even cover postage (anywhere the UK). 1/n
A Japanese edition of The Mathematicians’ Library lies on a deep magenta patterned carpet. The blue book cover features large white Japanese lettering, the English title The Mathematicians’ Library, and colourful overlapping translucent mathematical shapes forming a vivid abstract design. The author’s name, Thomas K. Briggs, and the publisher’s name appear in Japanese.

In #MathsToday, Year 10 were looking at the Product Rule for Counting. We looked at how subtly different scenarios lead to different calculations, each with different geometric/algebraic generalisations. I spent quite a while coming up with a context where all four variations felt meaningful.
Four-part task asking how many outcomes are possible when five students enter a music competition: awarding first and second place; choosing two winners; two judges each secretly voting for a favourite; and awarding Best Performance and Best Composition. The same four-part music competition task, illustrated using 5 × 5 grids to represent possible pairs of students. Coloured squares show which combinations are possible or distinct in each scenario.Generalisation of the music competition task to n students. The numbers of outcomes are shown as n(n-1) for first and second place, {n(n-1)/2 for two winners, n(n+1)/2 for two secret votes, and n^2 for Best Performance and Best Composition.

Looking at the volume and surface area of cones with Y11 in #MathsToday. I scribbled a dodgy version of this task on the board when a few pupils were getting confused with the difference between the height and slope of a cone. I've neatened it up here now.
A picture of two cones, one with the height given and the other the slope length.

The task asks pupils to decide which cone is easiest to find the volume of and which would be easiest to find the surface area of.

In #MathsToday, I did some Mathematical Gettier Questions with Y8 and Y13. Mathematical Gettier Questions are tasks that explore how incorrect methods sometimes give correct answers. Explained in more detail here: interwovenmaths.com/mathematical... What ideas can you think of for similar tasks?
Simplifying Fractions: Mathematical Gettier Question showing Ellie incorrectly simplifying 12/24 to 1/4 by cancelling the digit 2. Students explain the error, find a fraction where the method works, and test the claim that it works for 49/98.Simplifying Fractions – Sorting: Students sort 12 fractions according to whether Ellie’s digit-cancelling method does not work, partially works, or fully works.Double Angle Formula: Mathematical Gettier Question showing Ramona incorrectly assuming cos 2θ = 2 cos θ, giving 6/5 when cos θ = 3/5. Students find the correct answer, explain why 6/5 is impossible, and determine when her method would work.

I've just added the Algebraic Identities / Comparing Coefficients / Algebraic Fractions tasks I made back in 2022 to interwovenmaths.com/algebraic-id... My favourite part is these discussions, where [spoilers] you can show that 42 and 9 are in fact the only options, each with a nice interpretation.
Two algebraic fraction identities labelled a and b, asking which is easier. The coefficients 42 in a and 9 in b are highlighted in purpleTwo follow-up algebraic fraction identities labelled c and d. Question c asks why the identity with 14 highlighted is impossible; question d asks which other values of the highlighted coefficient d are possible.
