Chatting at the Lovecraft Café
By Nick Mamatas
Do I need to present my anti-fascist bona ides? Okay. November 1993 in New Hope, Pennsylvania, counter-protesting and dealing with mounted police when Nazis and Klansmen held a demonstration-cum-party they called “Gay Bash ’93.” Summer 1995, East Village, New York, helping de-Nazify Cherry Tavern and with street marches and some tussling. October 1999, Manhattan, eighteen KKK members versus six thousand of us counter-protestors. (I like those odds!) February 2017, Berkeley, California, dodging pepper-ball bullets on the UC Berkeley campus as then-popular μαλάκας (as my protest sign declared) Milo Yiannopoulos was holding an “alt right” rally, and then months more of counter-protesting as the fash realized that they could crowdfund their movement by livestreaming themselves beating up local skateboarders and punks. I am against fascism.
“So, why be pro-Lovecraft?” (sans quotes) is how this paragraph began in the irst, unsatisfying, draft of this essay. For the answer, read the play.

Miranda Jensen meditates on the role of science fiction to defamiliarise our society and help us see things in new and intriguing and challenging ways. Read the essay now: www.speculativeinsight.com
[Authors] can defamiliarize - make strange - social issues, technologies, and philosophies, providing readers the distance necessary to gain new perspectives and identify critical analogies. Margaret Atwood, Octavia E. Butler, and Ursula K. Le Guin are among the most divine in this regard, appraising the social currents of modern society through speculative twists and turns.
