Yep. I am really trying to market my book myself as, wonderful as my publishers are, the post-publication bit is predominantly up to the author. My book isn't therefore on the shelves of most Waterstones or even most independent bookshops.

It's absurd. Everywhere you look, grotesque waste - of resources, investment, incentives and - in the end - an entire section of society it took decades to build with your money. (2/2)

So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)

So a whole lot of my talented Humanities colleagues are now unemployed as of today. A lot of understandable concern over Exeter. But for over two decades my Hums colleagues were in the top quartile for their research contribution to society. History top 10. Now gone with only a national whisper.

Our very own Tom Chidwick is mentioned in today’s @thetimes.com Diary! While Heath denied the ‘monstrous allegations made about a lack of courtesy shown in my own home’, his friends conceded that he hadn’t accompanied Thatcher to the door so they wouldn’t be photographed together …
The big meeting between Sir Keir Starmer and Wes Streeting turned into more of a brush-past when the health secretary left after 16 minutes. It reminded the historian Tom Chidwick of a similar occasion when the vanquished Conservative leader Ted Heath was visited at his home by his successor, Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher emerged after 15 minutes but the meeting had lasted only five. Heath refused to impart any wisdom or join the shadow cabinet and Thatcher spent ten minutes chatting with the housekeeper to make it look less like a disaster. Heath’s campaign aide Tim Kitson later revealed that Heath had actually piled books on the chairs in his study so as to prevent his visitor from sitting down.

I think we’re at the stage where we need two separate governments. One will be there to deal exclusively with allegations relating to Peter Mandelson. This will be the main British government. And then there’s a secondary administration that does all those little things like running the country.
