The leading theory for why animals evolve big brains is social: Bigger brains manage bigger, complex groups 👫👬 👊🐙 Octopuses break that rule: mostly solitary, no parenting, and still the smartest invertebrates alive. 🧠 So why the big brain? Taking a look at a new study. 🐙 Thread 🧵(with sources)

Starting the countdown to Christmas with Besample's very own Advent Calendar of Insights from Beyond the West — 24 daily reminders that the world is bigger, more diverse, and far less WEIRD than many behavioral scientists assume. This one was gifted to us by our advisor @michael.muthukrishna.com
December 1: Household.

Household is a cornerstone unit in Western economics. It is a locus of income, consumption, and decision-making. But in some cultural contexts — for example, in rural Malawi — households often diverge from the idealized Western “household” model. Families can be spatially dispersed, household membership fluid, major decisions follow matrilineal / patrilineal kinship lines.

So in Malawi, kin social networks and resource flows often capture economic reality better than the Western household template. (Ansell & van Blerk, 2004; Meijer, 2015; Sassi, 2023)

Does cultural experience shape visual perception? New research finds "profound differences in visual phenomenology, with rural Namibian participants often failing to see percepts obvious to UK/US participants and vice versa." Preprint: doi.org/10.31234/osf...
Abstract: Vision science largely ignores the fact that rural visual environments typical of our species’ history differ radically from urban zones from which almost all samples are drawn: Only a handful of paradigms have been used to investigate rural-urban differences in visual perception, and some show limited effects or suffer from limited methodologies. Here we more than double the total number of paradigms in this literature, including visual illusions assumed to rely on universal mechanisms (e.g. Gestalt shapes, Cafe wall, curvature blindness). Results reveal profound differences in visual phenomenology, with rural Namibian participants often failing to see percepts obvious to UK/US participants and vice versa. In sum, what is universal and what is culturally-constructed in human visual perception remains a wide-open area of research.
