Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) does have an effect on overall symptoms of BPD. But individuals with BPD often suffer from interpersonal difficulties and these can severely affect daily functioning.

One of the main advantages of Digital Mental Health Interventions (DMHIs) is their ability to reach individuals who would otherwise never receive treatment.

Psychotherapy for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder is effective, maybe more so when certain comorbidities are present. That is the result of a large individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD MA) just published by Johanne Pereira Ribeiro Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.

It is well-established that unguided digital interventions are effective in reducing symptoms of depression. But what about the effect on quality of life?

The Borderline Personality Disorder Checklist (BPD-CL) can be used for self-assessment in various languages because it is a reliable and valid measure of symptoms of BPD in its Dutch, English, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish version.

Quite possibly one of the best presentations on how to conduct research. It is by Peter WG Tennant from the University of Leeds, UK and focusses on modern causal inference methods. More on it here: youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Getting ready to teach internal/external/construct validity, for the first time using the framing by Estlinger, @davebrady72.bsky.social and @eschwitz.bsky.social (www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi...). Super happy because this is much clearer than what I told student before!
Slide titled "Types of validity"

Violence in video games affects aggression in youths.

A affects B in C.

This statement is a generalization, of which any part could potentially be invalid.

Formalization of types of validity according to Estlinger et al., 2025Slide titled: Overview validity

A influences B in C

Internal Validity: A influences B, rather than just being correlated with it.
Construct validity (of the manipulation/treatment/cause): It is indeed A that has the effect, and not something else.
Construct validity (of the effect, the outcome): It is indeed B that is being influenced
External validity: The effect indeed occurs in C.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if a pharmacist looked over your shoulder while prescribing psychotropics and made sure you are doing everything right to prevent your patient from prolonged QTc intervals and its consequences like life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias?

It has often been suggested that psychotherapy works because patients expect it will work before they have even started treatment. But what if treatment expectations are an emergent phenomenon that develops in the course of psychotherapy and contributes to a successful outcome?

Behavioural Activation (BA) and Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) teach distinct therapeutic skills, and this study found that the acquisition of both skill sets—those taught in BA and those taught in MCT—is associated with changes in depressive symptoms. www.researchgate.net/publication/...

How does a digital psychological intervention for social anxiety disorder work? A recent study suggest that the most effective intervention components, psychoeducation and exposure, exert their effect through reductions in safety behaviours, avoidance and negative social cognitions.

How you view yourself (a.k.a. self-functioning) might play a central role in your mental health. It is not only strongly associated with rumination about one’s weaknesses and reduced ability to pursue meaningful activities but also with symptoms of depression and anxiety. bit.ly/3Fpf6Na

CBASP is more effective than Supportive Psychotherapy (SP). But how much more effective depends on the study site: 12,5% of the variance in this differential treatment effect can be explained by the study site, a recent analysis found. bit.ly/4kuIPDo

Clinically, this suggests that we should not only look at the clinical outcome but also at the negative effects when determining the success of a psychotherapy.

No pain, no gain? Nope. Negative effects can even adversely impact the outcome of psychotherapy. But that might not be equally true for all psychotherapies.
