The conspicuous overlap between record-breaking warmth, dryness, and/or low snowpack and these fires is simply not a coincidence. The scientific evidence linking increasingly extreme fire weather, as well as increasingly extreme wildfires themselves, to climate warming is clear.

Many of these fires, from British Columbia to the South of France, have exhibited extreme behavior even when ambient winds have been modest. This has largely been due to deep pyroconvective development, including full-fledged fire-generated thunderstorms.

British battery-electric vehicle registrations jumped 38% in June to 64,440 units, pushing EVs to nearly 30% of the new car market — their strongest monthly performance outside seasonal peaks, according to New AutoMotive data released Friday. The overall market grew 15% year-over-year to 215,921 units, but EVs did the heavy lifting, and Tesla posted a 42% rebound that signals it may finally be climbing off the floor in Europe.

Why is the vegetation here so dry, including record low fuel moisture in heavier fuel types? Well, this region record-low snowpack in 2026 (and a record-warm winter) and is experiencing a severe-to-extreme multi-year drought. (See just-issued NIFC Fuels and Fire Behavior.)
Screenshot of NIFC fuels and fire behavior issued today. It reads, in part: "Fuel conditions are significantly drier than seasonal averages. Live
woody fuel moisture remains critically low; in many cases, record low values have been measured. In addition,
1000-hour dead fuel moistures are well below normal and continue to decline. Fine fuels are fully cured.
Together with carryover fuel from previous years, they provide a continuous fuel source supporting rapid fire
spread and facilitating fire transition into heavier fuels."
