While the coast redwood undeniably reaches the highest of them all, the Santa Cruz Mountains are home to a diversity of tall trees, including the Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine. The tallest recorded redwood tree in the Santa Cruz Mountains is Big Basin’s “Mother of the Forest” at 329 ft high.

🧙 Tremella mesenterica, also known as Witch's Butter, absorbs water and grows in size, making it easier to spot after a storm. In the redwood forest, you’ll see them on decaying logs, silently and diligently working to decompose the wood and return the nutrients to the forest floor.

From the archives: A couple enjoying Big Basin in back of the “Auto Tree”, circa 1920. Though damaged, the 1,500 year old Auto Tree survived the 2020 CZU fire and is recovering today, a symbol of the incredible resilience of these ancient giants.
