Well, the border of 'alive' is not super clear in itself. Not just in the demarcation of death, but also for things like viruses. But a gradient with a wall at one end is not an incoherent concept. Compare, e.g., a black-and-white picture vs. colour pictures with different levels of saturation.

I think that consciousness and self-awareness probably exist on a spectrum, and that non-animal organisms are meaningfully a part of that spectrum in a way that non-living objects are not.

How the f- is any of this normal? Labour can choose to undo this immediately. Deproscribe Palestine Action. It was a disastrous decision by the Starmer admin and Burnham can undo it.

I'd always sort of wondered why Glasgow doesn't feature more in Medieval/Early Modern history, except as an ecclesiastical centre. TIL the Clyde wasn't navigable until it was artificially deepened by engineering works starting in *1768*. Govan was historically the site of a major fording point.

this isn't conjecture. This is the EXACT reason why one of the quickest ways to shut down a fash with a camera is to start shouting: "this video is brought to you by SquareSpace!" INSTANT demonitization. Because the streaming/social platforms already protect their advertisers more than the state.

...Assumption #4 has been driving me batshit, yet no one seems to realize it: if you're worried trans ppl might potentially harm your Dem candidate's chances, then YOUR CANDIDATE MADE A BAD DECISION! so why not join us in trying to get them to reverse position? juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
Assumption #4: The elephant in the room that no one is talking about
There is a striking disconnect between Talarico, Turek, et al. — who have clearly made a political calculation that abandoning trans rights will help them more than it will hurt them in this election — and the many cisgender liberals I’ve encountered online who are absolutely freaking out over the possibility that trans people’s critiques and protests will ultimately tank said candidates.
Both of these things cannot simultaneously be true!
If you think your favorite candidate enacted the correct political strategy, then there is no reason to berate trans people for protesting it, as those protests should already be baked into your candidate’s calculations. So why are you berating trans people then? (Unless, of course, you enjoy berating trans people just for the sake of it.)
Alternatively, if you think trans people *are* capable of tanking your favorite candidate via our criticisms and protests, doesn’t that imply that your candidate (and their consultants and strategists) totally fucked up in their political calculations here? And if they did fuck up, shouldn’t you be reaching out and complaining to *them* (rather than berating trans people), in the hope that they might reverse their bad decision?

I am struggling to recall the exact motions of the gestures (I think the shapes were traced onto the skin of the person being protected), but in retrospect the circle-dot motion seems remarkably similar to the motion I was taught to ward off the bad luck of a black cat crossing my path.

Are 'lurgies' the same as 'cooties', or was this supposed to protect you from real cold-like infection ('the lurgy')? Growing up in southeast US, we had a rhyme with gestures: "circle, circle, dot, dot, now I've got my cootie shot", plus a few more lines I don't remember about extending immunity.

I suppose if you're four, you'll have no idea which animals are considered 'obscure', since you're constantly learning about new ones for the first time. Which is not to downplay that this is impressive! I just remember running into this issue a lot as a little kid who was into animals, haha.

“In the latest fuck you to people who bought
Ed Sheeran tickets... the promoters are refusing refunds on the tickets purchased.
However... banks are allowing chargebacks if you used a debit card and credit card companies will allow a section 75 claim because you are not getting what you paid for.. meaning that because Macklemore and other support acts are no longer performing... you aren't getting what you actually paid for when you bought the tickets... which is grounds for a refund.
So get your refund, and consider donating it to a charity that supports Palestine.”

'The fact that acts that marginalize trans people are not typically described as being “divisive” implies that there is a presumed and unspoken “one-ness” that exists in people’s minds that implicitly precludes trans people.'
Screenshot from Julia Serano's excellent essay linked in the quoted post below, with the following passage highlighted:
When trans people critique trans-exclusion within our own communities and coalitions, we are often called “divisive” for doing so. In contrast, I have never once heard anyone use the word “divisive” to describe cis people who promote or tacitly support trans-exclusion (in this case, Talarico, Turek, et al.). The fact that acts that marginalize trans people are not typically described as being “divisive” implies that there is a presumed and unspoken “one-ness” that exists in people’s minds that implicitly precludes trans people.
