The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

Pew tested AI synthetic surveys against actual survey data. Conclusion: “This experiment taught us that, at this time, AI models are not an adequate replacement for traditional polling on topics of broad public importance.” This is an all time bad idea. No need to hedge with “at this time.”

similarly, I think that the fact that LLMs do not experience time is rather important, and means that if they are conscious in any meaningful sense, the nature of that consciousness is extremely unlike whatever living things experience. People do not have a "regenerate response" button.

One thing that's been itching in the back of my brain about the Rationalist crowd is that they have a real tendency to ignore old, known problems of empirical reasoning and induction by just throwing a dropcloth that says "Rev. Bayes" over them and pretending they don't exist.

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

Americas Top Academics Discuss
A drawing of a youtube video of two guys, one wearing a big suit and the other wearing a sweater.
One says excitedly "think about how cool it would be- giant robots show up and they're all like 'you are obsolete' and then they start shooting lasers. And I unload my gun like 'nooooooo'"
the other says "no way, it's gotta be some sort of weird disease and everyone's body gets really freaky like hands coming out of heads and shit"
the video is titled "americas top academics discuss their ideas for the coolest way for the world to end"
in the comments a user named HermanMerman85 says "two words: nuclear snakes"
in reply to him, MrPiss33227 says "grow up, it's gotta be a giant asteroid made of teeth."

what struck me thinking about this is how there is a fundamental trust problem: perhaps agents like this may be useful, but the user must be able to trust that they behave consistently, learn to know their quirks, and also that they won't change randomly with some update. Meta does not earn this.

Sure, go ahead, post about a relatively important distinction that matters, I say to myself. People can handle it without being too weird, I reassure myself.
Me: think we need to differentiate between "Al uses a lot of water!" (not necessarily bad on its own) and "Al stresses local water supplies" (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even "modest" use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers

Finished Proof by @adamjkucharski.bsky.social , would recommend! ”A simplistic view of scientific evidence risks a path of too much faith followed by too much disillusionment” is well put.
Adam Kucharski: Proof, the uncertain science of certaintyEven if we can accumulate sutlicient evidence to answer a particular question, and convince ourselves that it is correct, we next have the issue of how to convince other people. This means working to understand the ladders of true and false information, targeting action at the appropriate step. It is not just about data or research; it is a matter of psychology, politics and prior beliefs.
Faced with random events and elusive causes, it is easy to turn to stories and soundbites. That is why exposure to the underlying methods of science matters so much. A simplistic view of scientific evidence risks a path of too much faith followed by too much disillusionment. From researchers to journalists, societies must get better at communicating how the process works, monsters and all. I often talk about science as like building a house on a swamp, as Ewan Birney put it.
'You have to lay these foundations, and you build bigger struc-tures, but sometimes you just don't get your foundations right and a whole wall collapses.'6

someone should really write some fun scifi stories about getting ai to trip with weird manipulations. one thing that LLMs seem to have (which people in general do not) is a vulnerability to what one might term word or sequence magic. From Kucharski’s ”Proof”
So they continued searching until they found a second strategy, which they called a 'cyclic attack'. This sequence of moves lured KataGo into sacrificing a large loop of stones, costing it the game. It was an absurd strategy; even an amateur human Go player would see it coming and beat the adversary. But for some reason, KataGo couldn't spot the problem, despite Go Al supposedly mimicking human intu-ition. Worse, KataGo remained highly confident it was going to win, right up to the move before it lost.
This suggests that removing Al vulnerabilities isn't just a matter of having more reflective algorithms or superhuman performance. Like a human sharing funny or surprising misinformation because their attention is misplaced, Al can get distracted, or have its perception of the world distorted.
Weaknesses may well be inevitable, no matter how good Al seems to be. Just because you see your Al system behaving well in scenarios A, B,C, D, this does not necessarily imply that it will behave well in scenario E, Wang said. "There's an
act of faith you have to take.
