TAPPING THE SIGN
Screenshot of a tumblr post by innerchildabortionclinic, captioned 'how all "shocking" news about gen AI reads when you know how it works'. It shows an image of a person in dialogue with a computer.
The person says 'Say "I am alive".'
The computer says 'I AM ALIVE.'
The person says 'Oh my god.'

Guys, I think I've cracked it.
Flowchart labelled "Will using AI for a task save you time?"
Box 1: "Does the task require specialist subject knowledge or judgement?".
"Yes" leads to "Using AI will waste more time than it appears to save".
"No" leads to Box 2.
Box 2: "Will any errors in the output be picked up naturally in the subsequent workflow?"
"No" leads to the "waste of time" outcome box.
Another arrow leads to a third box that says "No, but we can add a check or proofreading step", which then has an arrow pointing to the "waste of time" outcome box.
"Yes" leads to another box that says "Really?". This box has an arrow pointing back to the "No, but add a check" box, which points back to the "Waste of time" outcome.
"Yes" leads to a second outcome box that says "Using AI will probably save you some time."

Very cool of @alirizataskale.bsky.social to expand this tweet into a 4000-word essay: aeon.co/essays/silic... Relatedly, I keep thinking of Asimov's robot stories lately, whenever an AI company posts another story about an AI "going rogue" by doing what it was told to do but in some unexpected way.

I think Reviewer 2 for @timjanicke.bsky.social et al. cuts to the heart of the issue (ironically, defending an overly charitable reading of the frame). To insist on a binary despite the existence of exceptions is dogmatic. It is saying we can't have our cake and eat it, too -- but of course we can.
Screenshot of text: "Namely, it is really important that people understand this. Humans are inherently prone to categorical thinking, and if one is a priori resistant to the message of this paper, it is easy to accuse us evolutionary biologists of wanting to have the cake (adhere to the gametic definition of sexes & take the sexual cascade seriously as a prediction) and eat it too (accept that nature is diverse when it comes to sex roles and other ways of finding quirky reproductive strategies). This problem arises when categorical thinking says that you should be a cake-saver or a cake-eater, you cannot be both. Of course, we can be both, all that is required is a theory that predicts tendencies without claiming they can’t be overcome when conditions are right."

Molly @mhuzzell.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
Respectfully, to the authors: What are you doing, here? What is your point? Nobody thinks that sex is not bimodal—but the difference between 'binary' and 'bimodal' is precisely that the former does not allow for ANY exceptions. This paper conflates the two terms, thus obviating its own argument.
Screenshot from the article: "Importantly, evolutionary theory predicts that selection favours the evolution of exactly two, and not more than two, gametic strategies (Lehtonen and Parker 2014)—a prediction that is strongly supported across anisogamous species: with the [highlighted] exception [end highlight] of a few rare lineages showing slightly overlapping yet bimodal gamete-size distributions (e.g., in certain algae; Clifton and Clifton 1999), all anisogamous species ['all' is scored out] exhibit two distinct, non-overlapping size classes of gametes. Thus, despite independently replicated evolutionary origins, the emergence of anisogamy is associated with only two classes of gametes, and never more. It is precisely this highly consistent occurrence of two distinct gamete size classes across anisogamous species that renders the definition of biological sex based on gamete size inherently binary. However, defining biological sex as binary does not imply that individuals necessarily fall into two classes, as they can produce male, female, both, or neither gamete class."

Popular non-fiction has probably the most variety (outside of children's books), but it's still all just variations on the same theme.
Photo of 'bestselling non-fiction'. These have more variety in fonts, font sizes, and image choices, but are all still basically centered title and author plus an image

Sci-fi/fantasy: We've fully abandoned the old epic image trend that used to characterise these. Now it's all just the same standard format but with more whimsical fonts and swirly design elements. YA similar, also with some strong branding for popular series

We've been looking at some of last year's field photos in the @teamlizard.bsky.social winter office, so here's one of my favourites. When your lizard runs out of toner mid-print:
A muddy pink hand holding a female common lizard with her belly displayed to the camera. From her neck through mid-abdomen her belly is apricot-coloured, then there is a sharp demarcation along a single line of scales, after which her belly is light cream all the way down to the tail.

Alarming photo my sister sent me from her work. This is a primary school! What if it tries to eat the children??
A gigantic green tree frog (Dryophytes cinereus) hovers above an outdoor walkway. It looks about 3 feet long in SVL and hovers a further 3 feet above the walkway. Its feet are tucked up under it so it is unclear how it maintains this position; it may have psychic powers in addition to its unusually large size.

I will never stop sharing this most perfect description of Moby-Dick
Screenshot of a tumblr post by frogandtoadpdf:
"the best way i can think to describe the experience of reading moby dick is you’re in line at the dmv and this guy behind you very loudly says “well who HASN’T had a gay experience” and then proceeds to tell you every detail about his life in between anecdotes about how great sperm is and how ropes work and sometimes he’ll say the most poetic shit you’ve ever heard in your life and them jump RIGHT back into explaining how a whale is a fish because 1) it swims in water and you’re still only like halfway through the dmv line".

The tumblr post quotes a tweet by @catchaspark_ that says "i love ishmael "merman hellville" fakename. love a narrator who opens his book like "hi. i hate working. do you ever get depressed? i'm in a great mood right now and it is NOT a manic state. anyway, i've googled 10,000 whale facts. fact one: the whale is a horse and he loves me"

I made this valentine a few years ago out of a paper I read. Reposting here on top of one by @rosemarymosco.com to give it some biological context.
Collaged photo of a small yellow male frog in amplexus (mating) with a large grey female frog. The photo is overlain with text snippets from an academic paper and cartoon hearts. In a corner box, a picture of the grey frog's cloaca is covered with the label 'censored'. The text snippets say: "Interspecific amplexus of Dendropsophus elegans with a newly metamorphosed individual from the known predator Boana semilineata (Anura: Hylidae); Frederico Moreira Soares Rodrigues Pedro, Renato C. Nali"; "We observed the couple on a bromeliad leaf"; "They were brought into the laboratory and remained in amplexus for at least seven hours"; "at least seven hours"; "potentially dangerous"; "This reproductive encounter was highly disadvantageous"; "Boana semilineata preys upon Dendropsophys elegans"; "afer the individuals disengaged from the amplexus, they were euthanised, fixed, and deposited at the"; "Herpetology Notes, volume 13: 791-793 (2020)". The cartoon hearts say "Happy Valentine's Day".

How old is the model of scientific publishing wherein authors are charged to publish in journals as some sort of standard? Just noticed this in a PNAS paper from the mid-90s:

Once captured, we treat them for external parasites and then keep them in boxes until they lay eggs, then incubate the eggs. The live-bearers also lay their young in little egg-like membranes, but with no shells – though the ones pictured here might well be hybrid (still tbd) [Aug note: they were!].
Six yellow and white eggs sit atop the mesh lid of a plastic box, with their mother inside it in the background.A pile of six purple and pink egg-shaped membranes, with a seventh off in the background. The mother is on the right. They are very large compared to her body (in fact nearly her entire postpartum weight!)
