Went walking a neighbour's dog today while they were out all day, and the poor thing wears a cone while she recovers from an injury. And now I'm thinking I need a joke item in D&D, the Ruff of Recuperation. Maybe it recovers Exhaustion faster when you wear it all day, or you get one of the...

All these islands are yours, except whatever's going on on Williston Lake. Attempt no landing there. youtu.be/5OAmaS-GiTA?... No, seriously, there's no universe in which you can go there safely. But it does feel at least a little sci-fi/horror-ish.

Possibly daft D&D character idea: a hexblade Warlock who regrets their pact and is trying to break it, because every time they use their pact powers, they get 1% closer to becoming fully subsumed by their sword for the same number of minutes.

There are some amazing choices in the thread, but let's see... Lance Reddick, Andre Braugher, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Neil Peart, Richard Dreyfuss (just saw Stand By Me recently)... Fred Rogers? Ernie Coombs? Ian McKellen... Bruce Boxleitner would be interesting. Matt Lillard?

Who was @joelplaskett.bsky.social's strongest musical influence circa Ashtray Rock and Three and why was it Tom Petty? I'm not complaining! I love both! I was just listening to Full Moon Fever, and half expected Through & Through & Through to come up next.

Adjacent to that, I always get a kick from the passerby telling Uhura and Chekhov where the Alameda naval base is ("in Alameda") was just that, because they were using a hidden camera, and the crew had to chase her down to pay her, give her a SAG card, and credit her.

Post your warning sign
A black and white pictogram of a small 4x4 checkerboard with a ball sitting atop it, reflecting the board back down, in the manner of countless 90s and 2000s 3D rendering tests.

Below the pictogram is an all-caps warning, "absolutely no chrome spheres over checkerboards permitted in this room."

There is a unique dialect of the Irish language that evolved in Newfoundland and became forever linked with the island. It is called Newfoundland Irish and many work to keep the language alive. This is the story. 🧵 1/7
Coastal landscape showing several red wooden buildings scattered across grassy terrain near the water. A small red house with white trim stands in the foreground on the right, while additional red sheds and houses sit farther back along the shoreline. Wooden fences run through the grass, and a couple of small white boats rest upside down on the ground. In the distance, more houses line the opposite side of the inlet under a clear sky with warm evening light.

It is with some hesitation that I admit that it was in the Year of our Lord 2026 that I finally listened to any Joy Division beyond Love Will Tear Us Apart. I'm offended by my own failure in this regard. But, in the same vein as the second-best time to plant a tree being today, I'm fixing that now.
The cover art of Joy DIvision's 1979 debut album, Unknown Pleasures. On a black background, the band's name and album name are written in plain white letters at the top and bottom, separated by a graph of apparent mountains on otherwise horizontal lines. The album art is a ridgeline plot of the radio emissions of a pulsar, CP 1919.

Had to walk past a couple of families of Canada Geese this morning on my walk. First of all, juvenile geese are not nearly as cute as goslings. They're cute! Just less so, because most of the yellow downy stuff is gone. Also, turns out, geese can growl. And it is intimidating.

Java programmer complaint: after fighting with it for two weeks, I really dislike Observable. I find it much harder to reason about than CompletableFuture. Possibly because I know the CF will happen at most once, and RX and Observable is about setting responses for every time the thing happens.

My favourite local bakery and cafe, Pan Chancho, published a couple of cookbooks with recipes that they use in-house, and my partner came home with one of them a couple of weeks ago. I finally got a chance to try making some bread from their pain ordinaire... looks like it turned out pretty well!
Two home-baked batard loaves, which is a long, broad French loaf of bread, cooling on wire racks on a black countertop. The loaves are pale and the slashes often seen on French bread are quite shallow and somewhat hard to distinguish. One loaf's exterior texture is much smoother than the other. They're certainly not expertly made, but for an amateur baker, they're at least reasonable.

Finally saw Howl's Moving Castle at the rep cinema near the house. Loved it. After all, it's Miyazaki! But Howl is absolutely going to be an NPC in at least one future D&D campaign. Maybe the PCs will interact with him. Maybe they'll just uncover some of his spells in a library...

Got the latest Bluesky update? Great! Alas, the developers changed how replies are ordered that, while it will provide for vibrancy flywheels, changes a behaviour you may have preferred. Setting > Content > Threads > Sort replies to a post by "hotness"? No thanks. Chronological for me!
The Bluesky settings menu, on Android. To change your reply order setting, start on this screen and choose "Content and media," which is the fifth menu option. The Bluesky Content and Media Settings menu, on Android. To change your reply order setting, select "Thread preferences" on this menu, which is the second option. The Bluesky Thread Preferences menu. For sorting replies, five options are given: "Hot replies first," which brings replies to the top that, themselves, have more interactions; "Oldest replies first," "Newest replies first," "Most liked first," and "Random, also known as Poster's Roulette," all of which seem fairly self-explanatory. I've selected "newest replies first," to maintain the generally reverse-chronological order that seems to work well on Bluesky.

Go to file > options > trust center > trust center settings > privacy options > privacy settings > connected experiences.

Turn that off.

To be filed in the he-who-laughs-last-thinks-slowest department, I just realized the It's A Wonderful Life is a retelling of A Christmas Carol, with three less ghosts and, instead of the actual Stooge in the story getting the message, it's one of his competitors.

13yo and I were looking through his Mordenkainen's Monsters, and after noticing how much the Shadar-Kai look like they're from Giedi Prime, he decided that House Atreides are from Planet Scotland with their desert bagpipes. He's also mad that Part 2 didn't have any bagpipes.

My cat is broken. He likes being cuddled in arms, being upside-down, and (failing at) suckling my other male cat's nipples. And yet, I wouldn't have him any other way.
