Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing

From the start of the Ukraine War, I began to hear exactly the same arguments from a very left wing relative and a very right wing Christian relative. And it really made me remember how that KGB defector in the 80s admitted in his debriefing that they played both sides.

But the person who I heard this from in 2013 was an American Republican, a pastor of a Calvinist church. A Never Trumper. So I'm not sure it escaped from cranky tankie discourse - it's been on the conservative i.e rightwing libertarian fringe for a while. May even have gone the other way?

I first became aware of this 'Churchill was a baddie and anyway UK shouldn't have fought Hitler' nonsense in 2013 from a libertarian Christian. There's a more serious version of the argument, but unlike Carlson's it doesn't ignore the Holocaust.

I think probably all of them had residency at some point over the past 15 years. But given Poland has improved so much relative to UK I'm not surprised if they chose the better lifestyle in Poland.

I know it's anecdotal but almost everyone I know who started working here during the EU years has returned. Most of them were scientists who usually do return, but the rest, all from Eastern Europe, returned. To their far larger houses! Worked here as cooks, cleaners and carers.

I met one of them in Zagreb. Seemed like a very cool young woman working in a cool Museum. Then she started telling me how awful Britain, was based on having lived in Manchester. "Full of foreigners and gender ideology," was her verdict. She was glad to be back in Croatia. 😬
