Temperatures in the Central Pacific El Niño region are the hottest ever measured (top panel), and far above any other El Niño at this time of year. But, if you adjust for the warming of the global ocean, the current trajectory is not so different from other very strong events.

The current size of the Antarctic ozone hole is close to the record observed in 2015. Our forecasts suggest that it may set a new record in the coming days. The good news is that, despite its large size, the 2026 ozone hole is much shallower than the one eleven years ago. More ⬇️ @ecmwf.int

🌡 August #C3S Climate Bulletin reports that August was the joint-warmest month on record & 1.65°C above the estimated pre-industrial level. Western Europe saw its warmest summer on record, while the average sea surface temperature across the extra-polar ocean was also the joint highest on record. ⬇️

❄ In August, Arctic sea ice extent was 9.2% below 1991–2020 average, ranking 12th lowest for August in the 48-year satellite record. Antarctic sea ice extent was 6.5% below average, the fourth-lowest August extent. The four lowest August extents have all occurred since 2023. ⬇️

The August Niño3.4 numbers (ONI) came in at ~2.6C, a tad lower than most models predicted as temperatures largely stalled. This will likely change next week with some strong westerly wind bursts, but the trajectory may lead to a slight downward revision in September model runs.

Globally, the hottest August in observed history is just about to end. In Western Europe, the summer of 2026 (June, July, August) has been the warmest as well. Compared to this year, 1976 (the famous UK summer) and 2003 (the hottest EU summer so far) look like amateurs in terms of heat (1/2)
