New paper published in @agu.org's GRL by Klingebiel and colleagues #AC3 Arctic cold air outbreaks generate distinct cloud patterns, from organised streets to open cells. Our study reveals that both wind-driven and buoyancy-driven instability jointly determine these regimes. doi.org/10.1029/2026...
The Picture shows a so-called cold air outbreak (taken from Nasa Worldview on 17 March 2024).

How does rain and storm dynamics in the tropical Atlantic interact with the ocean? Near-inertial responses to atmospheric disturbances enhanced mixing near the base of the ocean mixed layer, impacting SST and redistributing salt and nutrients. journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal... @maxplanck.de

We can actually measure the frequency of insect concentration in the air by radar. Fascinating stuff, now published by an interdisciplinary team at our institute and beyond: ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/115... @jquaas.bsky.social @idiv-research.bsky.social @vogelwarte.bsky.social
Histograms of maximum daily insect concentration at 150, 250, 500, and 750 m above ground derived from the three radars.

Four panels with blue bars primarily on the left of the x axis. Green and reddish bars to the left with the latter spreading also to the right of the x acxis. 150m above ground at top and 750m above ground at the bottom.

New paper alert ‼️ Changes in atmospheric circulation patterns are - to a large part - responsible for the observed summer drought trend in Europe since 1980. The exact cause for these shifts remains uncertain. www.nature.com/articles/s41... Uni press release: www.uni-leipzig.de/en/newsdetai...

"In 2025, extreme weather events continued to occur at concerning levels. [They] demonstrate the growing risks already present at 1.3°C of anthropogenic warming and reinforce the urgent necessity of accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels." www.worldweatherattribution.org/unequal-evid...
Rank of 2025 with respect to the 1995-2024 climatology. Rank 31 (purple) means it was the hottest year on record, rank 1 would mean it is the coldest in the last 30 years.

Interesting new paper on low-frequency variability in the Pacific. Aerosol-induced Northern Hemisphere dimming/brightening appears the main driver (Panel D). Rather uniform linear changes from GHGs as expected (Panel B). The remainder (Panel F) resembles the IPO (Interdecadal Pacific oscillation).
