amazing thread, must-read for anyone planning to work within the PbtA principles. it's absolutely crucial to remember that, despite the universal die roll for tasks, PbtA is actually a series of contextual minigames

as with any controls which depend on end-users, safety tools and sessions zero do not eliminate the possibility of serious safety failures at table. risks must be controlled much earlier in the process than the screaming brakes of the X-Card, whether in game design or session planning.

The quoted post, “on a really foggy morning you can sit on the dock and watch the local dentists wade out into the mist and scoop up a bag or two of nature’s laughing gas. oftentimes they’ll linger out there, giggling in the water”, has been turned into an illustration made from digital collage. Old-timey gentlemen stand in the foggy waters around a castle, “full” and “empty” signs floating over their heads, an enormous gas storage tower looms behind the castle. The quoted post is displayed on the image as a lower-case title at the top, with a serif font and some drop shadow for emphasis. The entire illustration is drop-shadowed onto a white background, so it looks more “real”.

Which is why I teamed up with James Patterson to write The Most Dangerous Games! There is a photo of a book cover which reads "MRBEAST THE MOST DANGEROUS GAMES. JAMES PATTERSON"

THE INEXORABLE EQUATION (1997)
Acrylic on Canvas - 48" x 36"

The window contains a beautiful but threatening view, seen from a place of illusory refuge. 1/2 #art

A smooth stone facade, reminiscent of a gravestone, occupies the entire foreground of the painting. A square window set into the top center offers a vision of a vibrant blue wave cresting at enormous height and about to crash down. A diagonal shadow cuts across the face of the stone. Three embossed ridges border each side of the stone. Green grass can barely be seen at its base.

A New Color (1/5🧵)

Page 1: A man is walking home, smoking a cigarette, being quietly trailed by a UFO above him. As he enters his apartment, two aliens watch from inside the ship. Alien 1, who has a large head, says, “that’s him. Let’s move.”

Page 2: The man walks upstairs as the aliens watch from the entrance of the building. The man enters his apartment and greets his little dog. Suddenly there is a knock at the door.

Page 3: he peers through his peephole, and sees the two aliens standing in the hallway. Alien 1 is holding a briefcase. From behind him, the voice of alien one: “don’t scream.”

Page 4: The aliens are seated across the room on the man’s couch. Sadie is in her bed next to them. Alien 1 says, “you’re not in any danger. Have a seat.” The man looks at his dog and thinks, “sadie is unusually calm.” Alien 1: don’t scream, or it’s a problem.

What happened to the good old days when you asked about a person's character and they said "Melf is a male elf"? This is not some "identity gradually moved to the character sheet" thing. It always was! These were game pieces from the start. And from the start some people liked to imagine more.
