A Late Cretaceous salamander from Jilin Province, China & the taxonomically informative atlas in modern amphibians onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #PapersinPalaeontology
Illustration of characters from the atlas vertebra distributed across the modern lissamphibian phylogenetic tree. Legend of characters and their respective symbols at top left. Underneath is a CT rendering of the atlas of Changchunerpeton nonganensis (RCPS VJ4001) in two views (whole specimen below, sagittal section above) and a black arrow indicating the placement of this taxon on the Hynobiidae lineage within the modern lissamphibian tree.
Grey vertical bars on the tree highlight the Triassic, Cretaceous and Neogene time intervals (left to right). On the right, two columns of pairs of CT renderings of the atlases of different extant lissamphibians. In each case, the entire atlas in anterior view is shown on the left, and a rotated sagittal section showing the medial wall of the neural arch and the interior of the centrum in right lateral and slightly anterior view, on the right. Pink and blue arrows indicate the positions of the spinal cord and notochordal canal on the specimens.

#SundayFishSketch is a quick little Red Handfish, since he ended up being the fish of choice for my field trip presentation this week!
Colored pencil drawing of a red handfish. As the name implies, his pectoral fins are red and very human hand-looking. He also has a fin coming out of his forehead shaped like a triangle that reminds me of a dinosaur.

🦄 Musée entomologique illustré t.1 Paris: Rothschild, 1876-1878. [Source]
Illustration from "Musée entomologique illustré t.1" (Paris, 1876-1878) depicting 16 detailed beetles, including a variety of scarabs and dung beetles. The central beetle is large with prominent, branching horns resembling a unicorn's horn, while others show diverse shapes, colors, and textures, such as striped, ridged, and smooth carapaces. Each beetle is numbered for identification. The pale yellow background contrasts with the muted tones of the beetles, emphasizing their anatomical features, legs, antennae, and distinctive horn-like protrusions, highlighting the historical scientific focus on entomology and beetle morphology linked to the "unicorn" keyword.

Historical illustration from "Atlas ichthyologique des Indes orientales néêrlandaises" showing two angelfish species. The top fish is yellow with broad, dark brown vertical stripes and an elongated dorsal fin that extends backward in a slender curve. It has detailed scale patterns and expressive, large orange eyes. The bottom fish features a rich orange body covered in numerous thin, dark horizontal stripes with blue outlines on the fins and facial markings. Both fish are depicted in side profile with finely detailed fins, scales, and coloration typical of scientific plates from the 19th century.

Black and white historical photograph showing a large dinosaur limb fossil partially excavated and laid out in a trench. A man wearing a hat and dark clothing sits beside the fossil, providing scale. The leg bones, including the foot with visible toes, are carefully positioned in the earth. Nearby are excavation tools, such as a pick and a bucket, along with cloth coverings. The surrounding terrain appears barren and rocky. A large cicada of the genus Magicicada, its eyes glowing magenta. Cicadas spend most of their life underground, only emerging near the end of a 17-year cycle to spend a few weeks above ground as adult imagoes. Somewhere in Pennsylvania in 1987, a grad student named Red walks along a wooded path, his feet crunching the countless cicada shells littering the ground. The mating song of the males is deafening, an urgent chorus of want and desire. Red barely registers the piercing song, so lost in his thoughts is he. He later looks up the name of the shedded exoskeletons and learns they are called exuviae. A perfect word, taught to Red by Brood X.

Illustration titled "Monograph of the British aphides," Plate IX, showing four detailed, hand-colored drawings of two species of green aphids: Siphonophora menthae (two winged, two wingless) and Siphonophora chelidonii (two winged, two wingless). The winged aphids have translucent wings with subtle pink tinting and black veins, while the wingless ones display textured, segmented bodies with fine leg and antenna details. Each insect is numbered and positioned on a yellowed background typical of 19th-century scientific plates, emphasizing morphological differences important for entomological study. The illustration highlights anatomical accuracy characteristic of Victorian natural history.

lower left: "Kero" is a Cerocranus. A fussy beetle who cares a lot about his looks. He is often late to things, because he gets distracted by mirrors and windows.
