They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

Look, get it straight: Rule 1: corporations are people. So they can spend lots of money gaming the political system. Rule 2: AI bots aren’t people. When AIs do stuff, it’s force majeure, so neither they nor their corporate progenitors are responsible for their actions.

I built a huge wheel at the top of the hill above the playground. I was terrified it would get loose one day, I begged the government to double my funding so I could afford bigger chucks, but it finally happened. The wheel got loose, it ended up crushing a dozen children. You can't prosecute a wheel

I would rather have pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep and elk and purple sage and four wing saltbrush than data centers and so far no one in tech has presented a compelling vision for how to have all of those things, they just seize more resources for the plagiarism engine.

My leather dye supplier sent an email announcing new colors. "Oooh!" I thought as I clicked through until I saw the colors were brown and brown.
Two shades of new brown leather dye, one is more yellow-ish, neither are exciting, and I would've sworn they both already existed in the product line.

In honor of the United States' 250th birthday and inspired by the perfect renovation of the reflecting pool, I decided to paint my nails American Flag Blue.
An extremely shitty rushed manicure with swirls of three different shades of algae green, done with as much effort and care as the president's buddy's company used on our national monument.

Think about data centre energy usage. People using genAI for words and pictures (things humans have made for millennia), or for activities/aids for which alternatives to genAI exist, are enabling technofascism and climate collapse. Don't buy Silicon Valley's framing for why this tech should exist.

I picked eleven pounds of strawberries this morning and this afternoon is dedicated to preserving them. First up: pie filling infused with lemon oregano.
Two deeply red strawberries of the Mary's Peak varietal. They are perfectly ripe and red throughout, a pleasure to bite and slice. In front of them is a small bunch of lemon oregano; it smells like lemon pez, sweet and bright but creamy rather than sharp. They all sit on a faded scratched dark wood cutting board.
