Despite almost all of those 'fighting aged men' being Jews and political dissidents who had fled the Nazis under Defense Regulation 18B thousands were rounded up and put in camps - even that did not satisy the Mail (a paper which had supported Hitler in the 1930s) and they wanted more, more, more

In May of 1940 there was a mass panic in Britain - stirred up by the tabloid press - about 'fighting aged men' who had come to Britain as 'refugees' posing a threat to the women and children of this country - and essentially forming a 'fifth column' that could, at any moment rise up against everyone

It's not about The Dignity Of Work. Unless you're very lucky, work is usually at best boring & at worst demeaning, painful & humiliating. If you've set up a system that says "You'd better work all day or you'll suffer destitution" & full-time workers are still destitute, the system is the problem.

The snobbishness about this comes in part from the fact you can no longer pay all your bills doing a minimum wage job. If you work 35hrs a week you should be able to pay rent, pay utilities, buy food & have a little left over for a few beers on a Friday. This never used to be a controversial view.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

RNLI reports ‘significant’ donations boost after being targeted by far right over small boats
Charity condemns ‘disgraceful’ intimidation and insists it will continue core purpose of saving lives at sea * UK politics live – latest updates The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has had a “significant” boost in donations since becoming a target of far-right agitators protesting over small boat crossings. The charity’s staff and volunteers have been subjected to “online and physical abuse” after involvement in a rescue on Sunday in which a dingy carrying asylum seekers was brought into Portsmouth. The "stop the boats" movement is being driven by the type of English suburban racist who thinks that one black family living in their street is one too many. Yes, it really is as simple as that, and it has been for decades. There is no intellectual depth to this stuff. It is pure, distilled hate.
