Calm down, computer software isn't making decisions about who lives and who dies in war. It merely processes a ton of data and then makes a recommendation to a human who has no realistic way to verify it

Malala Yousafzai is rightly known as an inspiration to millions & someone who stood against injustice while still a child. I was ashamed not to know the inspirational but tragic story of Iqbal Masih, an equally heroic young Pakistani, until I learnt about him from a kid’s book youtu.be/BQbuaT9Huos

Pretty cool. This isn’t the same as saying it’s leading to meaningful clinical improvements, but I’m quietly optimistic about these kinds of specific applications of AI in medicine. Been very impressed with our trial of an ECG AI tool, which we’re also publishing (presented at ACI)

Beautiful from Private Eye on the massive toddler-tantrum that Matt Goodwin and Reform are having, because they got whooped in Gorton and Denton.
Reform fury as someone else wins
by Our By-election Editor
Tim Shipsink
The losing candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election, Matt Goodwhinge, has demanded an immediate re-run of the election on the grounds that he lost
comprehensively to someone else.
"It's totally unfair and rigged,"
said Goodwhinge.
"I shouldn't
be required to sit there and suck it up, just because I lost."
Mr Goodwhine continued, *I can't believe that all those voters I demonised failed to back me.
Especially after I was endorsed by Tommy Robinson and ten million Russian bots on X.
"We have clear evidence of family voting, where people voted in order for me to stop deporting their families."
Mr Badloser concluded. "I'm the victim of colour prejudice.
They didn't vote for me simply because I'm not green."
Reform leader
Mr Farage,
speaking from a sun lounger on a rock near the Chagos Islands said,
"It's a tragedy that the people of Manchester won't see Matt in Westminster, but my constituents don't see me in Clacton either."

PLUMBER DEFEATS
MATT GOODWIN

As usual frothing-mouth Reform types envisage an invasion of evil men but, also as usual, women are the main victims of policies like this. For women from repressive countries, facing civil war or widespread female abuse, going abroad to study is often the first step in getting out.

"Asian or White demographics show the strongest objective indicators of competence" I know it ain't cool to go to The Bad Place™️, but wow the grok advice on how to pick a doctor But there's a YMMV disclaimer so probably fine
Based on AAMC data for recent applicants and matriculants, Asian physicians average the highest MCAT scores (508.8–514.3), followed by White (507.8–512.5). Black and Hispanic averages are lower (497.4–506.8). Studies on USMLE Step 1/2 and residency in-training exams show similar patterns, with these metrics predicting board performance and knowledge. Statistically, Asian or White demographics show the strongest objective indicators of competence on average. Always check individual credentials and outcomes.

I’m a *huge* fan of Hannah Fry but I’m not the only one who’s noticed how much AI sponcon she’s done. Really hesitate to say this as I don’t want to be a hater but I would call into question the neutrality of a doctor making TV progs about a product if they’re also paid by the companies that make it

As someone who has always felt tea is the superior drink, and yet has watched coffee‘s place in the world rise and rise, it’s been gratifying to see tea become synonymous with another subject close to my heart, gossip (I reiterate my regular assertion though that coffee is, in fact, a tea)
A selection of gifs that match the search ‘spill the tea’. 9 images of people, predominantly women (although I am here to say men can also be gossip-fiends, in fact I consider it a core part of my personhood. Plus Kermit is there and he’s a boy), sipping from teacups with suggestive expressions, and phrases conveying how they are patiently waiting to hear some juicy gossip.

Been off instagram this calendar year. Just checked in and found two patients have messaged me to ask clinical advice, in a strangely familiar way (”hey Rohin!”), and a relative of another patient has sent a DM of thanks. Which is nice but still feels like a strange new parasocial era of medicine.

I wonder if the half of America that voted for Trump or who secretly think what’s happening is right will ever even hear that the first casualties were almost 100 school children. We assume major news like that is widely reported, but American friends tell me their parents literally do not know

The tragic awfulness of this government is that it has extended a factional war against the left of the Labour Party into a war against almost all the good things we might have expected of it. It cannot respond to the crisis it faces, because its hatred of the Labour left is definitional.

There's a baseline anti-medicine culture that pervades this world. It's the default attitude that needing medication *in general* is a moral weakness. However, meds like cialis, metformin, and others are exempt in the growing overlap between bio-hackers, billionaire optimizers, and wellness gurus.
