Virginia Schutte @vgwschutte.bsky.social · 7hThe systematic attacks on science and scicomm, where I've built my career, has turned me from an optimist into a pessimist. I hate that. So. Yes. Work for gratitude and joy. Accept some version of hope that is "I'm not giving up". And know there's nothing wrong with you if it's difficult sometimes 030

Virginia Schutte @vgwschutte.bsky.social · 28/09/2026This piece is a strategist's nightmare. Premise: the "lowly poster" is often poorly designed and in a vast hall that's difficult to navigate But the solution to that is not to put posters online! I'd change the conference: different hall configurations, online companion info, less posters, etc. 241

Virginia Schutte @vgwschutte.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I love this, actually. I hate that it's necessary and I hate the time it must have taken, but this solution empowers and seems way better than doing nothing "I sent all my editors ... a number to call, so they can verify that it is me. I also offered my “tells” ... that make clear my work is mine." 130

Reposted by Virginia SchutteFaith Kearns, Ph.D. @fkearns.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I have made a viable career in scicomm on my own, but it has been and certainly is now, precarious. I will say again that there is no real way forward without a serious investment in human scicomm labor, and infrastructure. It is truly depressing out here for practitioners. 2175
Virginia Schutte @vgwschutte.bsky.social · 23/09/2026There's a typo in the on-screen text in this trailer and it's all I can think about How did that happen? Will they fix it? Virginia Schutte @vgwschutte.bsky.social · 23/09/2026A friend told me they think scicomm is only viable as a career path if you have a financial safety net: a partner with a steady and good salary, money coming in from some other source, etc. It made me mad and sad to hear but I'm in the midst of thinking about new income streams soooooooooo 1194
