the crazy thing about making time for any creative pursuit is that you literally have to do what you have a gut-deep yearning to do or else you'll see other people doing it, and it WILL make you insane.

The cruelest artist phenomenon is having the overwhelming urge and desire to draw when you can't do it. ... and then the second you can, all your energy evaporates!

"Why wasn't this piece of art more explicit with its messaging" cause it would have sucked ass Bob. Telling people the truth isn't as effective as making them experience it. That's why it's art and not an essay.

Was having a conversation on this topic just recently. A book (or story or painting or movie or whatever) is not a puzzle with a Correct Solution. It's an experience to think about and with, to chew over and then bring to other experiences.

It's okay to use references and tracing. Don't believe anyone who says it's 'cheating'. That's bullshit. References can be from life, art or photos... whatever inspired you. Tracing has been used as a transfer technique since at least the 1300s. There's no one way to be creative. Explore and play.

Lynda Barry did not squeeze your heart and simultaneously explain the point of all art with the barest of line drawings so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable."
HOW TO LOOK AT ART by Lynda Barry

In the first panel, a dog-headed woman, a mother, looks at a painting in the "Madonna with Baby Jesus" vein. A small blobby child is standing next to her.

Mother: IM NOT SURE HOW TO LOOK AT ART.
Child: WHATS SPOSTA HAPPEN?

In the second panel the dog-headed mother holds up her hands (paws?) trying to explain to the child.

Mother: SOMETHING BIG. A REVELATION.
SUDDENLY YOU JUST UNDERSTAND.

In the third panel dog-headed mother goes back to looking at the painting. The child holds up their arms to be lifted.

Mother: NOT SURE HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
Child: HOW BOUT LIFT ME UP SO I CAN SEE BETTER

In the last panel, the dog-headed mother is holding the child, their position mirrored by the Madonna and baby Jesus in the painting.

HAPPY PRIDE 🌈🌈🌈🌈✨✨✨✨BE FREE, READ GAY BOOKS AND COMICS
A 4 panel comic called "Romance Novels as anti-depressants". Panel one: The artist is shown sitting, reading a book that says "GAY STUFF" on the cover. The artist's eyes are stars and a rainbow is shooting out of the top of their head, with hearts floating around it. There is a caption and an arrow pointing to the contents of what they are reading, it says "and then they kissed". Panel 2: the artist is shown at another moment lifting weights, the text says "the next day". There is a light pink thought balloon that reads "they're in LOVE". Panel 3: the artist is shown making tea, the text reads "The day after". There is a light pink thought balloon that reads "they're in LOVE". Panel 4: The artist is shown walking up a street with grocery bags in their hands, the text says "and so on". There is a light pink thought balloon that reads "they're in LOVE". There is a url at the bottom directing readers to Jessfink.com/kwe

I can't believe we're going back to this kind of discourse but: Using references isn't cheating Using 3D mannequins and photo references is STANDARD, even for professional artists Shaming people and pushing them to draw exclusively from memory is harmful and can set back people who are learning

Here is your periodical reminder that: -Reference isn't cheating and no artist worth their salt has ever said that it is. -Professional artists and animators trace all the time. -You can use assets (3d models, photos, montages) that you made/got permission to use however you want in your art.

The author's brazen fetish, presented with such hedonistic flair and and open pride it makes you feel a little embarassed for needing to hide your own passions behind self-effacing jokes in order to preserve a sense of safe, pseudo-ironic detachment
