For all we talk about how cinema is getting dumbed down etc, stuff like Conclave and Black Bag would have been considered *very* high brow stuff circa 1976

the continued crankery of the English left-of-Labour flank is also, let's be quite real here, downstream of the fact that Corbyn's fanboys and fangirls, instead of ever recognising that they have in fact been huffing paint, invented a stab in the back myth, and I chose those words very deliberately

I think the only interesting story to be written about the Unabomber is roman-a-clef about the brother who turned him in. About the dilemma of realizing your brother is a psychopath who will keep killing and/or get himself killed unless you completely and utterly betray him

If Bernie Sanders wants to show that feels as strongly about Jackson winning as Obama feels about AES winning, he can go to Maine and campaign with him any time he wants, it’s not even a long trip for him

The OLP really did just decide that they’d rather burn themselves to the ground and hand the province over to Ford in perpetuity sooner than be led by Nate-Erskine Smith. It’s all very student union politics. All that matters is protecting your own petty fiefdoms.

idk its just. striking to me that the thing giving so many leftists pause in thinking about the soviet union is always the trials and purges and never any of the national minorities deliberately exterminated or forcibly relocated.

AIUI the polling that has come out shows a pretty close race, I wouldn’t bet against Flanagan but I suspect if Trump wasn’t so catastrophically unpopular this would be causing alarm bells to ring for the MN Democrats

I know a guy from high school who is very wealthy, very right wing, a self described “libertarian“ who thinks London is in the midst of a catastrophic crime wave thanks to Sadiq Khan, who hates the Tories with great passion because of Brexit.

In political media “the Tory Syndrome” is mostly understood as “the Conservative Party likes to do infighting and leadership coups because it’s in their nature or something“

Martin Concagh @mconcagh.bsky.social · 22h
There’s a book called “The Tory Syndrome” from 1980 which argues that Canada’s Tories are so dysfunctional because they’re just a coalition of everyone who isn’t a winner under the Liberals, and those groups have little in common and don’t like each other.

The LPC is a lot less factional than the LDP but there‘s a similar dynamic of the party constantly reinventing itself.

Martin Concagh @mconcagh.bsky.social · 22h
I think the comparison might be with Mark Carney of all people - Taikachi was such a big rhetorical and policy shift from the previous regime that voters didn’t treat the LDP like long-serving incumbents

Wuthering Heights being WB’s most successful film this year plus the rise of A24 is a pretty clear sign of what’s happening to cinema-going audiences and one I suspect Skydance will studiously ignore

A recurring controversy in left-wing spaces is "Was Person X being antisemitic or does he just call everyone he's arguing with a 'filthy lapdog of the globo-capitalist elites who should be liquidated along with his spawn'?" and I'm kind of tired of it, to be entirely honest.

With the epic failure of Digger the most financially successful film Warner Brothers put out this year was Wuthering Heights. Between that and the rise of A24, that should be a strong signal of what’s happening with cinema audiences but I suspect most studios will studiously (ha) ignore that.

This is the thing! Convincing people that, say, Israel is practicing Apartheid (to use an example of a linguistic fight from a few years back) makes them aware of specific injustices they may have thoughtlessly defended. What does convincing people that “Zionism is racism” change? It’s so conceptual
