We have gone a long way from making effort to not show the final moments of Bin Laden and Baghdadi (for a lot of important reasons) only for now to have this kind of gore porn bloodthirsty mob expecting entertainment. Exhausting.

Ballpoint pen, watercolor, colored pencil, a little crayon, and charcoal pencil.

Our guy pulls up deep in the forest on his 2-speed bike. He’s flanked by tall dark trees and his path is blocked by a massive spider. He lets the Big Fella know it’s on. “Big Fella,” he says. “I fixed my 2-speed. You still wanna race.” Reader, you know Big Fella wants in on that action. Next slide.Against a starry night sky we see silhouettes of Big Fella and our man racing down a hill. It’s unclear in the drawing who will win but Big Fella is likely about to pull away.

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.

A man stands at the ticket counter of a movie theater. An employee asks if he’d like to upgrade his ticket. “Would you like to upgrade to Cinema VIP? You can pause the film for bathroom breaks.” Our man is intrigued by the offer. Next slide. Inside the movie theater. The film has been paused and the movie screen lets the audience know: “PAUSED FOR VIP.” Our man stands at the center of the theater with his hands raised and a VIP badge attached to a lanyard around his neck. He’s part of the Cinema VIP program but at what cost? The other patrons have become increasingly upset with the pauses. A chorus of angry voices rain down on the VIP from around the theater. “Sit down, toilet boy,” one woman yells. She’s had enough of his potty breaks. “Oh COME on.” “Get this guy outta here.” “He ruined the trailers, too.” “Take his badge.” “3 times?!” “Put a diaper on.”

Part of the whole Musk/Trump et al thing is people with power and money not having the theory of mind to understand why people don't like them, and so doing more and more unlikeable things and expecting acclaim I'm return.

Exciting news everybody: so long as you change the name on the tin of your empire, it is suddenly not imperialism for you to violently reconquer the people you used to control, it's just sparkling anti-secessionism. Tankies, man, wow.
A bluesky exchange:
steviebaby: "you think the SFSR was imperialist? in 1917? how so? by retreating from world war 1? or by signing the brest-litovsk treaty?"
Me: ...by setting out to reconquer the whole of the empire possessed by the Tsars. At no point were the Bolsheviks, "oh, that Tsarist imperial possession just doesn't want to be ruled from Moscow anymore, we should let them go."

The plan was always "murder until they submit."

y'know - imperialism.
Me: The Fins, the Estonians, the Latvians, the Lithuanians, the Poles, the Ukrainians, the Uzbeks, the Kazakhs, the Kyrgyz, the Tajiks, the Georgians, the Armenians, the Azerbaijanis and more I am probably forgetting all tried to break away from the empire only to be clawed back.

That's imperialism!
steviebaby: should i list all the confederate states here or do you get the point

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a panel of judges are sitting at a table with a black tablecloth and a small sign that reads: TRYOUTS. A young person is in the middle of a performance when the eldest judge interrupts by saying, “thank you, we’ve seen enough.” The other judges next to him seem equally bored and unimpressed. Panel 2: the middle judge continues, adjusting his glasses to read off of a clipboard. “Next up… walrus dressed like Big Smoke from GTA San Andreas.” Panel 3: a walrus dressed like Big Smoke from GTA San Andreas appears before them. The walrus bashfully asks, “…is this the right room?” The middle judge gazes upon the walrus in awe, with his mouth slightly agape.

This 1952 memo from the Pentagon UFO files is superb There is no point preparing for aliens ‘because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic.’ 🤣 www.war.gov/medialink/uf...
There likely is nothing to be done at the moment to prepare for these possibilities (the only body of writing on the subject available in an emergency is science fiction), because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a giant elemental being made out of plants and vegetation stands, arms outstretched, in front of a small crowd of people. It says, “Humans! I am the spirit of all plant matter!” Panel 2: the elemental being solemnly continues, “You may call me… George Bush.” Panel 3: the crowd of people is standing around looking at each other awkwardly, unsure how to respond.

Thought I’d start posting from time to time some of the most famous Polish paintings, so that my non-Polish followers can learn a thing or two about our culture. This one by Jan Matejko is called “Jestermaxxing”, and it portrays a guy who, tragically, jestermaxxed
Matejko’s “Stańczyk”. From Wikipedia: “Stańczyk is shown sitting alone in a dark room, while a ball, hosted by the royal family, is in full swing in the neighbouring hall. His appearance is unlike that one would expect in a jester – gloomy, deep in thought. His seriousness is reinforced by his accessories: his marotte lies discarded on the floor, whereas a holy medallion of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa can be seen on his torso. The wrinkled carpet at Stańczyk's feet could have been formed by his collapsing heavily into the chair upon reading the letter, or through a nervous shifting of the feet thereafter. On the table lies a letter likely announcing that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania has lost Smolensk (now in Russia) to the Grand Duchy of Moscow, causing Stańczyk's sorrow and reflection on his fatherland's fate”

When someone tells you complex societal challenges have simple answers, they're either stupid or hoping you are. When they say those answers are more cruelty to a certain group, they're also evil and hoping you are.

I watched Yarvin’s Sheldonian lecture. What struck me is that he’s describing real institutional failures, but he completely misdiagnoses the cause. He treats “democracy” as the problem, when the actual collapse is upstream.
