Sure, but Buchanan's book combines a lot of the major themes: civilizational decline, culture war anomie, historical revisionism, demographic anxiety etc.

Yeah that would have been a good one also, but I think Buchanan gets you most of that and a lot more if you only have 20 books

Oh yes its terrible. I remember rightists saying Evola was their Marcuse and thinking "boy is that telling how much lower your standards for critical intellectuals is."

Matt McManus @mattpolprof.bsky.social · 19h
Yeah I was going to put Spengler over Evola but I think the latter better embodies the ethos

Obviously so much missing, but this would get people up to date with trends past and present.

That's partially what I mean about why I'm not sure he was the right guy for this. I worry Fareed is going to go "everything is more or less fine" while Deneen's pitch will be "elites from both parties have failed you!" and the latter will resonate.

Meanwhile, at your capitalist corporate job, you work really hard and generate extra production and money for the company, and they give that extra money to shareholders instead of you, who actually did the work. Must be socialism!

Socialism is the high-school group project. Mostly your fellow students will do their part because it needs to get done and you all want to get good grades. Your mate doesn't do a ton but who cares? You've all been there from time to time and besides his nan just died, so you cut him some slack 🤷

Its astonishing how much of American conservatism boils down to the vague but intense paranoia that somehow someone somewhere is getting something they dont deserve at your expense

The history of political thought is replete with contempt for these sycophantic power-seekers. Yet I know of no systematic examination of it. I wonder if someone has constructed a tradition of thought about the toady? Their apparent ever-presence in political history is a regularity worth comment.

You have to be totally ignorant of presidential history to make this claim. Teddy Roosevelt (who read a book a day) and Thomas Jefferson (who designed Monticello and UVa and was fluent in French) were clearly far better educated and more intelligent.

There is something so vulgar about the kind of conservative who came from a modest background, but strives to climb the same social hierarchies that once disadvantaged him by endlessly and shamelessly flattering those he now insists are our social betters.

This is probably my biggest gripe with the more left-wing crowd. They either say we just do a repeat of the Soviet Union but without the bad stuff apparently or they say that the anarchist commune that you stayed on that one time is totally perfect model for large societal governance.
