LANTERNS was fine. I think the biggest problem with it is it wants to get to so many ideas and themes, and little of it feels fully satisfying.

The first recipient of the grant is Machine Gods, NPR’s new video podcast from former Hard Fork hosts Kevin Roose and Casey Newton, which is receiving a $480,000 grant from the organization. Tarbell is also separately backing NPR’s “Power and Influence” desk, giving the public media outlet $250,000 to help expand its coverage of how AI intersects with politics, money, and power.

I like a video game where the world has ended and the only thing that’s survived are people’s notes that say “mom said my new job at the edge of the hellmouth seems dangerous but I told her they call me lucky Larry in the break room” and also a torn jacket with the name Larry stitched on the lapel.

The pundit view of the world is skewed by many things, one of which is a refusal/inability to understand geographic spaces that exist outside their own neighborhoods. It's all based on stereotypes and conjecture—even when they go to other places, and their columns are essentially bad travel writing.

Now on Halloween 5 and I’m going to need a map of Haddonfield and the surrounding environs. Because Haddonfield is a suburb, but there are also rednecks and now Michael Myers floated downriver to a man who lives in a shack of some kind.

I respect Wade here a lot more than I do a coward who wouldn't make that argument. Once my mom and I were looking at standalone freezers at Sears and debating a little too loudly how many bodies you could fit in one. Salesguy walked up and was like "no way. You could absolutely fit 3." Got the sale

The reason we need more religious studies education is because the "New York Times" can just allow someone to say in an interview that wokeness is like the Old Testament, which supposedly has no forgiveness, and the assertion goes unchallenged.
"I mean, you happen to be right. And by the way, I’m not being dismissive of you. I’m just saying that my friends have tested me more than yours, and maybe I’ve tested them. I’m not religious, but I’m a Christian, and God forgives. That’s what it’s all about. The problem with quote, unquote, wokeness — and don’t get me wrong, it is great that marginalized people have a voice; it is great to advocate for anybody that feels marginalized — but the problem is we’re in the Old Testament right now, and the Old Testament has no forgiveness. The Old Testament didn’t work, so they had to write a remix called the New Testament.

There’s been discussion lately about how the Woke 1.0 era, which refers to the immediate post-George Floyd era, was “crazy.” Do you see that moment in time as just “crazy?” Was there anything redeeming about it? I think I just answered. Again, it’s great to help those that need help. We need more of that. The problem is when you institutionalize it. My half a joke: The Salem witch hunts — I’m sure the first three witches they caught were actually witches. But then you open up a witch office, and now you gotta start lying because you got overhead. You gotta justify the witch hunters’ pensions and [expletive]. I’m glad that all of this stuff happened, it needed to happen, and because it happened, maybe I’ve heard some voices that I probably wouldn’t have heard otherwise."

The Ellisons are doomed to fail because they’re in so much debt that they can only make mega-hits but they’re also going to insist that all of these movies be devoid of woke and play to Middle America and that’s just completely unsustainable

Part of the problem of making yourself Action Man for over a decade is that if you do something else, audiences won’t know if they want it (the reviews didn’t help but still).

the other thing is: “go be a bricklayer” is incredibly stupid, and you know this because you, college-educated guy, know that a degree doesn’t assign you to a path. even if the robot apocalypse were real for your current profession (it’s not), a good broad education helps you to be adaptable

Adversity equals something bad happened + the passage of time x power/prestige. That's all this is, never mind that anything that happened to Watson was entirely his fault and entirely inadequate for what he's actually done to real people the broadcast studiously avoided mentioning

[Deep breath} When you predict Oscar nominations for a movie based on pedigree without seeing it, you are volunteering to aid in a publicity system that favors movies the campaigns for which are already well funded, and by doing so further disadvantaging films whose primary merit is their quality.
