Kemi Badenoch, who is currently purging the Tory candidates list, tells Today she stands for "uniting the country" and wants to "bring the country together". She then laments the Coalition years when "we had to make concessions". It's amazing how often "unity" means "everyone must agree with me".

We have never done either particularly well since WWII. Nationalisation wasnt great. The country is too big to run services centrally so its was divided up into areas government departments find convenient but don't take notice of, or map well onto other geographies they interact with.

I think it's because nationalisation means owned and run by the state. He seems to prefer ownership and/or control of services to be more regional or local. Municipalisation is probably a better term but not necessarily accurate either.

"The Bank of England was set up by Tony Blair" It's easy to forget that Tony Blair had been in power since 1694 when the Bank of England was founded. Good job Brain of Britain Liz Truss is here to remind us.

Oh yes, they were rubbish. There were many times I thought I might not make it home before the handle went. I think people have forgotten how many you used to end up - nearly every shop used to put your stuff in one if you didn't tell them not to. Didn't have to buy bags for the bin though!

Arguably the greatest song to be recorded 4 times by 3 iterations of a band under 3 different names and in 2 languages, and then remixed once before it reached number 2 (eventually scoring a number 1 when it was covered by my mate's little brother's band a decade and a half later)

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

People do need to actively "opt in" so you don't end up with people in a legal situation they never wanted, intended, or may have been coerced into. But as soon as you have any sort of register you are just creating civil partnerships under another name.

mattdoff22.bsky.social @mattdoff22.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Don't get married or have a CP then. You can always engage with a lawyer and seek to create the same protections and rights through other legal means. It'll be expensive but no-one would presume laziness on your part.

Divorce and separation can be messy and stressful enough within the existing frameworks. Creating another much more complex set of rules as to what constitutes a legal relationship would be madness.

I had a civil partnership. Literally just had to turn up at the registry office with the witnesses and sign a piece of paper. It's can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be.

The average person I know is not using home cameras to monitor their kids. But if you can't deny your kids the Internet for 24 hours because it inconveniences you or it's too hard (its not, just remove the router or their devices), you will never use it as a punishment anyway.

It's a roll, but a good one is soft and moist and of a generous size that allows you to fit half a tray of chips on it at least and still be able to bite it. Not a roll with a hard crust or small like you would have with soup.

Many people who are not in areas experiencing or at risk of wildfires still leave their home and travel to places that are. I'm on a campsite in a place at risk and people are still having fires, but if they create an issue there's now no defence they didn't know it could be a problem.

mattdoff22.bsky.social @mattdoff22.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
I imagine if you caused a fire after the alert and ended up in court, the court will now no longer accept "I didn't know it was so dangerous" as any sort of defence. But also I'd expect the public in general may be more likely to challenge people being stupid than they were before.

🧵High above Todmorden, the rock formations of Bridestones Moor have inspired stories for generations. One of the most enchanting tells of a wedding party caught in a thick moorland fog. Lost among the hills, the bride, groom and their guests were said to have been turned to stone,
The image captures the Bridestones, a striking half-mile stretch of weather-sculpted millstone grit outcrops situated on Bridestones Moor. The site sits approximately 400 to 450 meters above sea level near Blackshaw Head, overlooking the Upper Calder Valley and Todmorden. Image: Tim Green CC BY-SA 4.0

Front cover, The Death of the Fuhrer, by Roland Puccetti, featuring a woman in a low cut red dress with white spots. She has removed a mask from her face to reveal that she has a side parting and a Hitler moustache

In town we have a mix of victorian buildings that were shops and I assume the home of the shop keeper and 1960-80s retail buildings. Few are fit for purpose really. Large underused stockrooms and spaces above the retail space. Upper floors not easily converted to flats either.

mattdoff22.bsky.social @mattdoff22.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
Most town centres (even those that seem to do OK) need to reduce the number of retail units and the amount of unused back room space too - who needs a large stockroom anymore?

mattdoff22.bsky.social @mattdoff22.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
More residential property in town centres will increase the base footfall level which will be good for those specialising in convenience, food and drink, or those with a particular attractive offer and the traditional textile stores will continue to retreat to larger retail centres.

mattdoff22.bsky.social @mattdoff22.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
Many town centres relied on textile trade after supermarkets caused traditional grocery stores to close. But cothing was very susceptible to online competition - more choice, easy return of unwanted items - and their demise has been a major problem for others who piggy backed on their success.

Most people do have the option to buy meat and veg in person. They do it at a supermarket. I genuinely do think a significant proportion of people do not actually like shopping and will therefore always use prefer to use a physical stores that sell everything over those that specialise.
